National Sports Awards 2016 announced

The Union Government has announced the National Sports Awards for the year 2016. National Sports Awards are given every year to recognize and reward excellence in sports.


Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna: The scheme was launched in the year 1991-92 with the objective of honouring sports persons to enhance their general status and to give them greater dignity and place of honour in society. 
  • Under this scheme, an amount of Rs. 5 lakhs is given as award for the most spectacular and outstanding performance in the field of sports by an individual sportsperson or a team.

DRONACHARYA AWARDS: The Dronacharya Award, instituted in 1985, honours eminent Coaches who have successfully trained sportspersons or teams and enabled them to achieve outstanding results in international competitions.

ARJUNA AWARDS: The Arjuna Awards were instituted in 1961. Dhyan Chand Award is India’s highest award for lifetime achievement in sports and games. The award is named after the legendary Indian hockey player Dhyan Chand.

Winner: Punjabi University, Patiala

Details:
The awardees will receive their awards from the President of India at a specially organized function at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on August 29, 2016. 
  • Apart from a medal and a citation, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee will receive a cash prize of Rs.7.5 lakh.  
  • Arjuna, Dronacharya and Dhyan Chand Awardees will receive statuettes, certificates and cash prize of Rs.5 lakh each.  
  • Recipients of Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar will be given Trophies and certificates. 
  • Overall top performing university in inter-university tournaments will be given MAKA Trophy, award money of Rs. 10 lakh and  certificate.
