SSC CGL
The Staff Selection Commission conducts Combined Graduate Level Exam at
various centers all over the country. Candidates are given the liberty to choose exam center as per their choice
while filling in the application form for SSC CGL exam.
SSC CGL Exam Pattern
SSC conducts Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination in 4 different
levels. The first two levels, Tier-I and Tier-II exams are conducted online.
The third level, i.e. the descriptive Paper in English/Hindi is conducted via
pen and paper mode while the fourth level, i.e. the computer skill test can be
taken anywhere as per the candidate’s availability.

SSC CGL has introduced a descriptive paper in English/Hindi of 100 marks
that have to be completed in 60 minutes.
The time limit of Tier-I examination has been reduced from 75 minutes to 60
minutes. The key point to note here is that there is no sectional cut-off in
any level of SSC CGL Examination.

The syllabus for SSC CGL is different for
all the 4 levels in which the examination is to be
conducted.
SSC CGL Tier-I Exam
Pattern
The Tier-I exam of SSC CGL is an online mode of examination where 4
sections are present.
The total marks allotted for all the sections combined is 200 and the time
allotted for the completion of Tier-I exam is 60 minutes.
A penalty of 0.5 marks will be imparted to every question attempted wrong
by a candidate.
A cumulative time of 80 minutes is allotted to physically handicapped
students.

SSC CGL Exam Pattern
Tier-II
The maximum marks for each section in Tier-II exam is 200.
In Tier II Quantitative Ability and English Language is the compulsory test
that every candidate has to take but the rest two depending upon the post or
job preference.
A total of 100 questions are asked in each section and a cumulative time
limit of 2 hours is provided to a candidate to complete each section which gets
increased to 2 hours 40 minutes in case of physically handicapped students.
0.25 marks are deducted every time a candidate marks a question wrong.

SSC CGL Exam Pattern
Tier-III
This is a descriptive exam designed to test the written skills of the
candidates in English/Hindi. Conducted offline, students are required to write
essays, précis, application, letter etc. in this exam.
The exam carries 100 marks and the time allotted for the same is 60
minutes. The allotted time for candidates belonging to PWD category is 80
minutes.
Tier-III paper is given by the candidates who are interested only for the
post of “Statistical Investigator Grade II” & “Compiler”.
SSC CGL Exam Pattern
Tier-IV
Tier-IV examination comprises of a couple of skill sets required for
certain Government Posts all over the country.
DEST (Data
Entry Speed Test): This skill is required for
qualifying all the posts, other than compiler, to check the typing speed of the candidate. The
students are given an article in English which they have to type on Computer. A
candidate is required to type 2000 words in 15 minutes.
CPT
(Computer Proficiency Test): Word Processing, Spread Sheets and Generation of slides are the three modules
that the commission takes into consideration for a candidate to be proficient
in for the post of Assistant of CSS.
Tier-I and Tier-II exam is compulsory for all posts while Tier-III is
specifically for candidates applying for the post of Statistical Investigator
Grade-II and Compiler. Similarly, Tier-IV exam is specifically for Assistant
Audit Officer.
Negative Marking
Giving a wrong answer to a question will lead to deduction of 0.5 marks in
Tier-I and paper – I, III and IV of Tier-II while that of 0.25 marks in Paper
II of Tier-I.

Criteria
There are 4 criteria that a candidate must fulfill while filling in the
application for SSC CGL.

for the post of Inspector (Central/State Excise/Examiner/Preventive Officer),
Sub-Inspector in CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) and sub-inspector in NIA
(National Investigation Agency)
SSC CGL Preparation
The preparation of SSC CGL exam must be done judiciously. Since the
syllabus covers a large number of topics, it is necessary for the candidates to
choose the right set of books to prepare effectively in the given time frame
for their examination.
Candidates must also go through previous years’ SSC CGL question papers in
order to acquaint themselves to the changes in pattern of the exam
and to know the sections from which the questions are majorly asked in the
exam.
