Report on road map for elimination of poverty
A task force headed by NITI Aayog Vice-Chairman Arvind Panagariya to prepare a road map for elimination of poverty has submitted its report to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and suggested setting up of a committee to identify people below the poverty line (BPL).

Talgo completes Delhi-Mumbai trial run

The Spanish-made Talgo train completed its final trial between Delhi and Mumbai in 11 hours and 42 minutes at a maximum speed of 150 kmph on Sunday, making a pitch for its induction in the Indian Railways.

  • Talgo aims to reduce travel time between the two cities by four hours. The Rajdhani Express train takes around 16 hours to cover the distance.



Finmin revises criteria for recapitalisation of PSU banks

State-owned banks looking forward to the next round of capital infusion will need to fulfil a new set of criteria, including credit recovery, as the Finance Ministry has revised the recapitalisation norms.
The capital allocation for the current fiscal would be based on
  • Cost of operations as well as recovery and
  • Quality of credit on the basis of risk weighted assets.

Only those lenders that fulfil the criteria post third quarter (October-December) results of the current fiscal will be eligible for the second round of funding.


Kerala decentralises disaster management
Kerala State Disaster Management Plan 2016 approved by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA)
  • To establish a decentralized disaster mitigation and emergency response mechanism. The plan proposes a network of early warning and monitoring systems.



National Human Rights Commission report on cases on police:

As many as 35,831 cases were registered against the police with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in 2015-16 only 94 first information reports were registered in 2015, recently released data by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
  • In seven of the 10 years from 2006 to 2015, not a single policeman was convicted of human rights violations. 58 policemen (54 from Chhattisgarh) were convicted in 2009; 233 (232 from Delhi) in 2011; and 3 in 2014.
  • NCRB data from 2006 to 2015 show that on an average, 120 FIRs are filed against the police for rights violations. 



Yoga guru Ramdev sets up mega food park in Nagpur
Renowned Yog Guru and founder of Patanjali group Baba Ramdev has laid the foundation stone of his dream project Patanjali Mega Food and Herbal Park in Mihan area which is located at outskirts of Nagpur.
  • He announced that Patanjali group will give soft loans to farmers in the area for producing various agro products.



China, Russia to hold joint exercises in S. China Sea

China and Russia will hold joint naval exercises in the South China Sea (SCS).
  • It is a eight-day Navy drill in the South China Sea off southern China’s Guangdong Province.
  • The drill, “Joint Sea-2016,” will feature Navy surface ships, submarines, fixed-wing aircraft, ship-borne helicopters marine corps and amphibious armoured equipment from both navies.



Paytm rolls out KYC-enabled customer base

Mobile payments and e-commerce platform Paytm has announced the roll out of Aadhar-based e-Know Your Customer (e-KYC), a move that will help enable a real-time and paperless customer verification process.
  • The Aadhar-based eKYC network will onboard consumers and merchants from over 400 towns across India to build India's largest KYC-enabled customer-base.



Qatar National Bank soon to open branch in India
Qatar National Bank (QNB) has received approval from India's regulatory authorities to open a branch in the country and begin operations.
  • The bank has its presence in more than 30 countries.



World’s 1st robotic eye operation performed in Britain
British surgeons have successfully performed the world’s first robotic operation inside the eye, potentially revolutionising the way such conditions are treated. 
  • The procedure was carried out at John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford.



Prakash Sharan Mahat visited India:

Prakash Sharan Mahat, Foreign Minister of the new government in Kathmandu Starting his three-day trip to India.
  • The visit by Mr. Mahat, his first as Foreign Minister, hints at a reset in Nepal-India ties after more than a year of turmoil which erupted after Nepal promulgated a new democratic Constitution on September 20 last year.
  • Nepal will seek to start a new chapter with India prioritising infrastructure development in a bid to overcome the impact of the 2015 earthquake and months-long economic blockade.

Philippine revenge drama wins best picture at the world’s oldest film festival
A revenge drama Ang Babaeng Humayo (The Woman Who Left) on 10 September 2016 won the Golden Lion for Best Film Award at the 73 Venice Film Festival.

Jamie Murray-Bruno Soares win US Open doubles title
Great Britain’s Jamie Murray and Brazil's Bruno Soares won their second Grand Slam doubles title, defeating Spaniards Pablo Carreño Busta and Guillermo García-López 6-2, 6-3.
  • This was Murray’s 3rd doubles slam title of his career, and 2nd with Bruno Soares, with the pair winning the Australian Open earlier this year.



Vietnam wins 1st Paralympic gold with world record
Vietnam won its first-ever Paralympic gold medal after para weightlifter Le Van Cong lifted 183 kgs, to set a new world record at the event.
  • Vietnam also ended its six-decade-long wait for an Olympic gold last month in Rio with a record-breaking performance by shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh in the 10-metre air pistol shooting event.



Angelique Kerber wins US Open Tennis tournament
German professional tennis player Angelique Kerber won her first U.S. Open title and the second Grand Slam trophy of her breakthrough season. 
  • The German defeated Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. 



Army Green beat Neroca FC to win Durand Cup
Army Green on has won the 128th edition of Durand Cup football title.

Woman in ‘The Kiss’photograph dies at 92

The woman in an iconic photo shown kissing an ecstatic sailor in Times Square celebrating the end of World War II has died.
  • Greta Zimmer Friedman was 92.
  • On Aug. 14, 1945, known as V-J Day (Victory over Japan Day), when Japan surrendered to the United States, people spilled into the New York City streets from restaurants, bars and movie theatres, celebrating the news.
  • That’s when George Mendonsa spotted Friedman, spun her around and planted a kiss.
