SAARC Anti-Terrorism Mechanism Second meeting concluded in Delhi

The 2nd meeting of the High Level Group of Eminent Experts to strengthen the SAARC Anti-Terrorism Mechanism recently concluded in Delhi. 

Details:
Delegations from all SAARC member countries participated in the conference. During the meeting, the issues of terrorism and the measures to strengthen the SAARC anti-terrorism mechanism were discussed. 
  • Besides terrorism, the important issues discussed during the meeting included drugs trafficking, financing of terrorism and cyber crimes. 
  • The member countries shared their national experiences on various related legislations to counter terrorism. 
  • All member countries of SAARC agreed to move forward towards operationalizing the SAARC Terrorist Offences Monitoring Desk (STOMD) and the SAARC Drugs Offences Monitoring Desk (SDOMD) in order to strengthen the combat efforts against terrorism.

SAARC:
The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is regional intergovernmental organization and geopoliticalunion in South Asia. 
  • Its member states include Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. 
  • SAARC compromises 3% of the world's area, 21% of the world's population and 9.12% of the global economy, as of 2015.
  • SAARC was founded in Dhaka in 1985. Its secretariat is based in Kathmandu. The organization promotes development of economical and regional integration.
SAARC Terrorist Offences Monitoring Desk (STOMD):
The SAARC Terrorist Offences Monitoring Desk (STOMD) was established in Colombo in 1995. 
  • The objectives of the Desk are to collate, analyze and disseminate information on terrorist offences, tactics, strategies and methods. 
SAARC Drug Offences Monitoring Desk (SDOMD):
The SAARC Drug Offences Monitoring Desk (SDOMD) was established in Colombo in 1992.
  • The objectives of the Desk are to collate, analyze and disseminate information on drug related offences in the region.
