1st October
is celebrated as the International Day for Elderly People each year which was
first established at 14th of December in the year 1990 by the United Nations
General Assembly.
- The significance of Day is to raise awareness about
issues affecting the elderly and to appreciate the contributions that
older people make to society.
- This year, the theme is "Take a Stand Against Ageism.".
Aircraft with Indian airborne warning system set for induction
The DRDO has fitted its own airborne early warning and control system (AEW
& CS) on a modified Embraer ERJ 145 aircraft imported from Brazil.
- With this, the first of the two small surveillance aircraft carrying the first Indian airborne early warning system is slated to be inducted into the Air Force in about two months.
Botanical Survey of India (BSI)- Endemic Vascular Plants of India
According to a recent publication by the Botanical Survey of India (BSI)-
Endemic Vascular Plants of India, almost one of every four species of flowering
plants found in India is endemic to the country.
- Tamil Nadu accounts for the highest number of
species with 410, followed by Kerala with 357 and Maharashtra with 278.
- Of the 18,259 flowering plants reported in the country, 4,303 (over 23%) are found only in India.
Patna High Court quashes Bihar’s prohibition law
The Patna High Court on
Friday declared Bihar’s amended prohibition law illegal.
- Under the law police or excise department officials could send anyone found with a liquor bottle in his house or residential compound, to jail for 10 years.
Sports Sector Gets the
Infrastructure Status
Sports infrastructure will
be included under the Harmonized Master List of Infrastructure
Subsectors.
- This is mainly aimed at addressing the issue of
deficit of sports infrastructure in the country.
- The sports sector now becomes eligible for obtaining long term financial support from banks and other financial institutions on the same principle as is available to other infrastructure projects

will be launched

- It would be launched at Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on October 2 to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
Award for CSR initiative on watershed
A different approach to watershed
management by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid
Tropics (ICRISAT) and supported by the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
programme of JSW Group was awarded Best Livelihoods Initiative at the India CSR
Summit held in Mumbai.
- Within three years Groundwater level has increased by 1.5 to 2 metres.

The Centre has appointed
R Subramania Kumar as Executive Director (ED) of Indian Overseas Bank
(IOB).
- Prior to this appointment, Kumar was Executive Director of Indian Bank.

Spiritual leader Indirabetiji
passed away
Vaishnavacharya Goswami
Indirabetiji, a proponent of Sanatan Dharma known for her devotion to social
causes, passed away. She was 78.
- She founded Shrimad Vallabh Acharya Research Academy to spread her guru Vallabhacharyaji’s philosophy and theology and authored several books on religion and philosophy.
VCA adopts Lodha panel recommendations
The Vidarbha Cricket
Association became the first full member of the BCCI to adopt the MoA and Rules
and Regulations as recommended by the Lodha Committee.
- At a Special General Meeting of the VCA at Nagpur, 727 of the 730 members who attended the meeting voted for the change.
