Govt. panel of experts says river Saraswati did exist
An expert committee of geologists, archaeologists and hydrologists say they have found evidence of the course of the river Saraswati, a river mentioned in the Rigveda and Hindu mythology .
  • The seven-member committee, headed by Professor K.S. Valdiya of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR).


India-Russia sign agreement for S-400
India and Russia formally inked the agreement for five S-400 Triumf air defence systems and four stealth frigates and a joint venture to manufacture Kamov-226T helicopters in India.
  • The S-400 is considered one of the most advanced long range missile system in the world and can tackle all incoming airborne targets at ranges of up to 400 km.
  • The system is capable of firing three types of missiles, hence creating a layered defence for any country that owns it.
  • Designed by the Almaz-Antey Central Design Bureau, the S-400 Triumf, referred to as SA-21 Growler by NATO, is considered one of the most advanced long-range defence systems in the world.


Union Government has launched Mining Surveillance System
The mines ministry on 15th oct came out with mining surveillance system (MSS), a pan-India surveillance network using latest satellite technology, to check illegal mining. 
  • MSS is a satellite-based monitoring system, which aims to check illegal mining activity through automatic remote-sensing detection technology.


Rajnath Singh inaugurates 10 days long ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav - 2016’
 ‘Rashtriya Sanskriti Mahotsav (RSM) -2016’ is being organized by M/o Culture in IGNCA premises, Janpath, New Delhi  from 15th to 24th October, 2016. 
  • The festival was inaugurated by Shri Rajnath Singh, Union Minister for Home Affairs in the presence of Dr Mahesh Sharma, Minister of State (I/C) for Culture and Tourism and Shri Padamanabha Acharya, Governor of Nagaland.


Telangana government launches T-Bridge in Silicon Valley

Telangana Minister for Information Technology and Industries K. Taraka Rama Rao has launched T-Bridge, a new programme aimed at connecting Indian start-ups with opportunities in the global market, in the Silicon Valley at San Francisco in the USA in partnership with Uber and TiE.
  • T–Bridge is one such move towards opening a channel of investment from across the world to the State of Telangana.
  • T-Bridge would provide a platform for fast-track tech companies looking to tap into India’s huge consumer market for technology. T-Bridge would help start-ups accessing UberEXCHANGE, Uber’s flagship start-up mentorship programme, and TiE Silicon Valley’s mentor network.


India and Hungary set to sign two agreements
Vice-President Hamid Ansari arrived in this historic capital city of Hungary
The Vice-President is set to sign two agreements:
  • one of them relating to water management. 
  • Exploring opportunities in fields including information technology in the larger Central European region.


Uber, Centre sign pact to impart skills training
Uber said it has signed an agreement with the Ministry of Electronics and IT to use Common Services Centers (CSCs) to impart skills training to drivers.
  • Through this agreement, Uber aims to ensure that people who come to these CSCs, especially at the grassroot level, gain access to tools, training resources and related information for becoming a driver on its platform


Market capitalization : Infosys loses fifth spot to ONGC
Data from BSE showed that Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd (ONGC) beat India’s second largest software exporter Infosys Ltd to become the fifth most valuable company in India by market capitalization. 
  • ONGC had a market capitalization of Rs2.37 trillion whereas Infosys market capitalization stood at about Rs2.36 trillion.


Kigali makes history with HFC freeze
197 countries have struck a new landmark deal at Kigali in Rwanda to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases, hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which could prevent up to 0.5 degrees Celsius of global warming by year 2100.
  • The announcement came at Kigali where 197 countries that are party to the Montreal Protocol were trying to negotiate a deal to substantially reduce the use of HFCs by 2030.


Finland is the safest country in the world: WEF
A recent report carried out by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on ‘Safety and Security,’ has revealed that the Finland is the safest place in the world with Qatar and UAE ranked second and third respectively.
  • Further down the list was the UK, which was ranked at 63, while the US was in 73 place.


India becomes first team to play 900 ODIs
India's ODI againts New Zealand at Dharamshala on 16th oct 2016 is the team's 900th making it the world first side to achieve a milestone. 
  • 900th One Day International (ODI) match between India and  New Zealand will be held at the HPCA stadium in Dharamshala. 
  • Out of the 899 ODI's, India has won 454, lost 399 tied seven, while 39 have abandoned.


Brazil lifted Inaugural BRICS U–17 Football Tournament Championship
Brazil has lifted the 1st BRICS U-17 Football Tournament 2016 held at Goa after defeating the South Africa in the title clash with 5-1.
  • For the 3rd place between Russia and China, Russia defeated China 2-1.


Usain Bolt to retire after the 2017 World Championships
Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt has confirmed that he is going to retire after the 2017 World Championships in London, and also informed that the Racers Grand Prix later this year will be his last race on Jamaican soil.
