Paris agreement
India has ratified the Paris Agreement on climate change on the 147th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
  • India became 62nd country to ratify the agreement.
  • The Paris Agreement on climate change will enter into force one month after 55 countries that account for 55% of global GHG emissions ratify the agreement.


Mohammad Bin Zayed chief guest for Indian Republic Day
The Indian government has invited the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to be the next Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day parade of 2017.
  • This is the first time that a leader of the United Arab Emirates will be honoured with the invitation of being the Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day parade.


'Murga' wins first prize at Swachh Bharat Short Film Festival
Young filmmaker Katyayan Shivpuri, from Maharashtra, has won the first prize at the Swachh Bharat Short Film Festival (SBSFF) for his work "Murga".
  • The short film was directed by young filmmaker Katyayan Shivpuri from Maharashtra. 


Bihar brings in new law banning liquor consumption, will challenge HC order
Bihar government has notified the Bihar prohibition and excise act, 2016.
  • It aims to ensure that the ban on sale and consumption of alcohol, including Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL), continues in Bihar.
  • Those flouting the ban face up to 10 years in jail, a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh and there is also a provision to confiscate the house or premises where liquor is stored or drunk. 


5th International Buddhist Conclave
It is being organized by the Ministry of Tourism in Varanasi-Sarnath in collaboration with the State Governments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
  • The International Buddhist Conclave is also one of the initiatives being taken by India as its commitment as the land of origin of Buddhism and to improve the experience of pilgrims as well as tourists wishing to savor the essence of Buddhist heritage, at the Buddhist sites of the country.


Vayoshreshtha Samman-2016

They are National Awards for Senior Citizens. They were recently presented by the President to eminent senior citizens and institutions in recognition of their service towards the cause of elderly persons, especially indigent senior citizens.
  • Vayoshreshtha Samman is a Scheme of National Awards instituted by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment (D/o Social Justice & Empowerment) initially in 2005 and was upgraded to the status of National Awards in 2013


Delhi Police launches mobile app for senior citizens
The Delhi Police has launched a mobile application for senior citizens to enable them to reach out to the police quickly in emergency situations. 
  • The application 'Delhi Police Senior Citizen' was launched by Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung and Police Commissioner Alok Kumar Verma.


R Ravindra concurrently accredited Ambassador to Guinea
Shri R Ravindra, presently Ambassador of India to the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire, has been concurrently accredited as the Ambassador of India to the Republic of Guinea. 
  • The Republic of Guinea is a country on the West coast of Africa.


Urban A.P., Gujarat makes ‘clean’ sweep
Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat have become the first States with all cities and towns declared open defecation-free (ODF) on October 2, marking two years of the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
  • All the 180 cities and towns in Gujarat 110 cities of Andhrapradesh were declared as open defecation-free (ODF) at a programme in Porbandar.


Two-thirds of elderly financially dependent on others, says study
A nation-wide survey was recently conducted by Agewell Foundation on the state of elderly people in India. The survey conducted involved a random sample of 15,000 people across India aged 60 or above.  
  • 65% of the elderly in India are dependent on others for their financial requirements and undergo financial crisis. Pension was the main source of income for 38% of the respondents.


Yuan joins elite club of reserve currencies
THE yuan’s inclusion in the International Monetary Fund’s elite reserve currency basket on Saturday was hailed by Chinese businesses and analysts as a “historic moment.”
  • IMF announced the launch of its new Special Drawing Right basket, including the yuan, effective from October 1.


NGO promoting clean energy bags UN climate solutions award
An Indian NGO, Swayam Shikshan Prayog, has bagged a UN climate award for 2016. 
  • The NGO, which trains women to become clean energy entrepreneurs across Maharashtra and Bihar, is one of the 13 projects to be recognised at the forthcoming UN climate summit in Marrakesh, Morocco, in November.


Indian-origin teen wins Google Science Fair prize
A 16-year-old Indian-origin South African teen has won a $50,000 scholarship, the grand prize at the annual Google Science Fair for her work using orange peel to develop a cheaper “super-absorbent material” that helps soil retain water.
  • Her solution to the problem of drought uses orange and avocado fruit peel that is normally discarded.
  • The Google Science Fair is a programme for budding scientists between the ages of 13 to 18, who are invited to solve the world’s biggest challenges using      science and technology.


Japan's Ohsumi wins Nobel Prize in medicine
Japan's Yoshinori Ohsumi, a cell biologist specialising in autophagy, has received the 2016 Noble Prize in Medicine. 
  • He has received the award "for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy". 


Arundhati Roy’s next novel to be out in 2017
Nearly, 20 years after her Booker prize-winning novel 'The God of Small Things' was published.
  • Arundhati Roy has announced the release of her next novel titled "The Ministry of Utmost Happiness" in June 2017.


India's Gaganjeet Bhullar wins Korea Open
Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar won his 6th Asian Tour title, winning the Korea Open 2016 in Incheon,South Korea.
  • The 28-year-old, whose last Asian title came in 2013, was awarded a cash prize of $196,000 for the win.


Daniel Ricciardo wins 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix
Australian racing driver, Daniel Ricciardo has won the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix held at the Sepang International Circuit in Selangor, Malaysia. 
  • Max Verstappen finished second while Nico Rosberg ended at the third position.
