World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern.
  • The theme for this year 2016 is Innovation, Integration and Inclusion.


World Sustainable Development Summit 2016 concluded in New delhi
The World Sustainable Development Summit 2016 (October 5-8,2016) concluded in New delhi.
  • Theme: 'Beyond 2015: People, Planet & Progress', is among the first international platforms to discuss the new agenda post the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals and the signing of the Paris Agreement. 
  • It has gathered global leaders and thinkers on a single platform to stimulate action for sustainable development.


Modi to make history with visit to Lucknow Dasara
The much renowned Dasara celebrations at Aishbagh’s Ram Leela maidan here has acquired new significance this year as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to attend it.
  • This is the first ever visit to the function by a sitting Prime Minister, provoking Opposition parties to accuse the BJP of politicising the festival. Earlier premiers have celebrated the festival in Delhi.


Bathukamma Event Enters Guinness Book of World Records
The Telangana government on Saturday organised the traditional state festival of 'Bathukamma' on at the Lal Bahadur stadium in Hyderabad.
  • The event, attended by about ten thousand women, found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. 
  • The Telangana government has declared 'Bathukamma' as a state festival on June 16, 2014.


Union Power Minister assures electricity for all by May 2017
Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal assured that India would have 100 per cent electrification for all by May 1, 2017.
  • He also launched the Urban Jyoti Abhiyaan Mobile (Urja) app, developed by the state-run Power Finance Corporation, to enhance consumer connect with the urban power distribution sector.


Education qualification for Rajasthan cooperative polls

Bharatiya Janata Party government in Rajasthan has introduced similar qualifications for those willing to contest elections to the cooperative bodies by amending the State Cooperative Societies Act.
  • The amendment, which came into force on October 4, provides for different qualifications for block, district and State-level cooperative societies.
  • The minimum educational qualification for members of the primary cooperative societies will be class VIII, while the district-level societies will have class X as the qualification and the State-level bodies will have graduates as its members.


India’s first international arbitration centre inaugrated by Devendra Fadnavis
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated India’s first centre for international arbitration in Mumbai.
  • The MCIA will be governed by a 17-member governing council.
  • The Mumbai Centre for International Arbitration (MCIA) will initially be located at Express Towers.


ISRO bracing to deploy rover on lunar surface
India is getting ready to deploy an indigenously developed rover on the lunar surface for on-site analysis of various samples and relay them to the earth station.
  • Chandrayaan-II Mission includes launching of lunar explorations by geosynchronous launch vehicles (GSLV Mk-II) with clinical precision. 
  • The wheeled rover would be useful in using multiple applications by collecting soil and rock sediments for on-site analysis and transmitting the findings to the earth station.


Obama casts early vote in Chicago
U.S. President Barack Obama has cast his ballot for the November 8 general elections, which would elect his successor, by taking benefit of the provision of “early voting” in his home town of Chicago.
  • Early voting, which has gained popularity in the last few election cycle, allows a voter to exercise their right to vote several weeks ahead of the main date of the general elections.


U.S. lifts economic sanctions on Myanmar
President Barack Obama on Friday lifted U.S. economic sanctions on Myanmar, the culmination of years of rapprochement that he has worked to facilitate.
  • It removes the national emergency with respect to Myanmar — the executive order authorising sanctions that has been renewed annually by different U.S. Presidents for about two decades till now.


Google released new Pixel phone
Google’s new “Pixel” smartphone is off to a fast marketing start with $3.2 million in television ads in two days since it announced the upcoming introduction.
  • Google’s introduction of the first phone it has designed itself puts it in direct competition with the  dominant smartphone makers
  • This is the first time they are in the position of selling themselves to people, as opposed to selling themselves to brands.


Luo Zhaohui, China’s new ambassador to India
China's President Xi Jinping appointed Luo Zhaohui, a senior diplomat with previous assignments in Pakistan and Canada, as China’s new ambassador to India.
  • He will take over from former Chinese ambassador to India Le Yucheng who left New Delhi in April.




Sprinter Srabani Nanda wins Ekalabya Award
Sprinter Srabani Nanda has bagged the 24th Ekalabya Award for the year 2016 in recognition of her sporting excellence.
  • Srabani won gold in 200m, silver in 100m and 4x100m relay in 12th South Asian Games held in Guwahati in February. 
  • She had also won bronze in 100m and 4x100m relay in Asian Grand Prix Athletics in Thailand in June 2015.


PV Sindhu now brand ambassador of Vizag Steel
Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd (RINL), the corporate entity of Vizag Steel, has roped in top ranked Indian Badminton Player PV Sindhu as its brand ambassador.
  • Sindhu, currently amongst the top 10 ranked players in the world, is the first Indian female athlete to win the Olympic silver medal at the Rio Olympics and she is also the first athlete to win back-to-back medals at the World Badminton Championships.


Harika Dronavalli Beats Hou Yifan At International Chess Meet
India's Harika Dronavalli defeated World No. 1 Hou Yifan of China to be at joint fourth position in the Isle of Man international Chess tournament.
  • This tournament was took place from October 1st to 9th, 2016.
  • Harika is now with five points after seven rounds, just one and a half points behind the championship leader Eljanov Pavel of Ukraine.


National tennis championship winners:
Vishnu Vardhan won the national singles title for the fourth time, while it was the maiden crown for Riya Bhatia in the Fenesta National tennis championship.
Men: Vishnu Vardhan bt Siddharth Vishwakarma 6-3, 6-4. 
Women: Riya Bhatia bt Eetee Maheta 7-6(7), 6-3.
Under-18: 
Boys: Nitin Kumar Sinha bt Dhruv Sunish 6-3, 6-4. 
Girls: Akanksha Bhan bt Humera Shaik 6-0, 6-2.
