World Pneumonia Day is
observed across the world on 12 November. The day is annually observed to raise
awareness about pneumonia, the world’s leading killer of children under the age
of five; promote interventions to protect against, prevent and treat pneumonia;
and generate action to combat pneumonia.
Centre unveils steps to boost cybersecurity
In an attempt to strengthen cyber security in India, the government has
announced a slew of measures.
- All organisations having a significant IT
infrastructure will need to appoint cyber security officers.
- Efforts are being made to strengthen Cert-IN, the governments’ cyber security arm. The government has approved 26 new posts.
India signs landmark civil
nuclear deal with Japan
India has signed a historic civilian nuclear deal with Japan during the
annual bilateral summit held recently in Tokyo.
- India is the first non-member of the
non-proliferation treaty (NPT) to have signed such a deal with Japan. The deal
will help India access Japan’s nuclear market.
- The deal includes the option that Japan can give a year’s notice before terminating it in case India breaks the nuclear testing moratorium that it had extended to the Nuclear Suppliers Group in 2008.
NSDA Signs MoU with British Council to Collaborate for
Joint Research in Skills Sector
National Skill Development Agency and The British Council have signed a MoU
to collaborate for undertaking joint research projects in the area of skill
development.
- This collaboration comes as a part of strengthening the overall research mechanism in skill development space and to encourage research collaborations with various national and international organizations.
No jail term for celebrities endorsing products in
misleading ads: GoM
A panel of ministers has approved imposing a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh and a
one year ban on celebrities who endorse products making unrealistic claims for
the first offence, but has dropped the controversial proposal for a jail term.
- A high-level Group of Ministers (GoM) was assigned to look into the issue. The GoM has deliberated on the issue and agreed to do away with the provision for imprisonment of celebrities, arguing that such provisions do not exist in any country.
TAFE setting up Centre of
Excellence in Rajasthan
TAFE, the world’s third
largest tractor maker, in collaboration with the Rajasthan government, is
setting up a Centre of Excellence — ‘JFarm Rajasthan’ — and a
Custom Hiring Centre in six zones in Rajasthan at a total outlay of Rs.970
crore.
- Mallika Srinivasan, Chairman & CEO, TAFE said: “This JFarm centre will showcase the latest and best in agronomy and farm practices, latest trends in production, protection and processing of crops, and also the world’s best in terms of showcasing farm mechanisation trends and their applicability to India.”
Chinese Minister elected
Interpol President
China’s Vice-Minister for
Public Security was elected the President of the International
Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). Meng Hongwei is the first Chinese
official to take the post.
- Mr. Meng took over the position from his predecessor Mireille Ballestrazzi from France after being elected at the closing ceremony of Interpol’s 85th General Assembly held in Bali, Indonesia.

Prashant Telang has been named national winner of the “Doodle 4 Google”
contest.
- The sixth standard student from Vibgyor High School
in Balewadi area was chosen for her Doodle submission on the theme titled
“If I could teach anyone anything, it would be”.
- The Doodle will be featured on the Google India homepage on November 14 to celebrate Children’s Day.

defeated Sri Lanka to win the gold at the seventh World carrom championship in
Birmingham (UK) on Friday.
- India's S Apoorwa and Kajol Kumari also won gold in
the women's doubles event.
Virat Kohli dismissed
hit-wicket in Rajkot
Virat Kohli became the first
Indian Test skipper to be out hit wicket since Lala Amarnath in 1949 after his
foot disturbed the stumps in the ongoing Rajkot Test against England.
- Batting on 40, Kohli went well inside the crease to pull a short ball from spinner Adil Rashid when he dislodged the bails with his foot and got out.
