President arrives in Mumbai on 6-day visit to India
Israel President Reuven Rivlin arrived in
Mumbai on November 14th on a six-day visit to India to further strengthen
bilateral ties. He will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs
Minister Sushma Swaraj.
- The
Israeli leader will join President Pranab Mukherjee in opening an
agro-tech conference in Chandigarh.
‘Kohinoor represents sentiments of
people’
The Centre recently told the Supreme Court
that the Kohinoor diamond, though a “symbol of victory” for the British Empire,
represented the “sentiments of the people of India.”
- The
return of Kohinoor diamond to India has been a long-standing demand, with
many claiming that the diamond was taken forcibly. The fight to get back
the diamond has been ongoing since India’s independence.
Chinese ship opens new trade route via Gwadar

A new international trade route in Southwest
Pakistan has been opened up by a Chinese ship exporting goods to the Middle
East and Africa.
- With
this, the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) has become a reality.
This route that is being developed by the Chinese in Pakistan is expected
to make huge amount of economic gains for the country.
- The
CPEC is one of the most important projects of the ‘one belt, one road’
project initiated by China that aims to connect the Asian economic giant
with Europe and Africa, thereby making the country a bigger player in
world economic affairs.
World likely to cross 1.2°C global warming
level this year
According to a preliminary assessment
provided by the World Meteorological Organisation in its Status of the Global
Climate in 2016 report, the world is likely to cross 1.2° C of global warming
above pre-industrial levels in 2016.
- This comes dangerously close to breaching the 1.5° C warming levels advised as an ambitious target to stay safe from the worst impacts of climate change.
APEC Forum's Week starts in
Lima, Peru
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
Forum's Week started at Lima in Peru bringing together leaders of world's
largest economies, businessmen and investors.
- A
creation of Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific, which would include all
APEC states, is one of the main topics on the agenda of the 2016 APEC
Summit that is widely seen as the premier business event drawing together
business and economic leaders of 21 Pacific Rim countries.
Molinari Rail to set up
manufacturing unit in India
Swiss major Molinari Rail will set up a
manufacturing and assembly centre for auxiliary power units for diesel
locomotives in India by next year.
- Molinari
Rail AG has entered into a strategic pact to design, manufacture and
deliver the auxiliary power units (APUs) for 1,000 diesel locomotives to
be built in India for Indian Railways.

Hollywood actor Jackie Chan received his
little gold statuette, an honorary Oscar for his decades of work in film on
November 13th at the annual Governors Awards.

Fortune magazine named Mark
Zuckerberg Business Person of the Year
Fortune magazine has named the co-founder and
CEO of the biggest social networking site Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg as Business
Person of the Year, 2016.
- The
32-year-old Zuckerberg, was honored based on various criteria, including
the company’s performance year over year as well as his vision for growth
and the ability to achieve it.

An Indian-origin man from South Africa was
awarded the Global Citizen Award for his "innovative and visionary"
contribution to the global community.
- Imtiaz
Sooliman founded the internationally-lauded Gift of the Givers Foundation,
which is Africa's largest disaster relief organisation.
- "It
will build faith and confidence in others to support African NGOs in the
future".
Gulzar named for Tata
LitFest's Poet Laureate 2016 award
Lyricist-writer Gulzar will be honoured with
2016 Tata Literature Live! Poet Laureate Award.
- The
award will be presented to Gulzar, an Oscar and Grammy Award winner, at
the inaugural of the festival on November 17.

Mahindra and Mahindra appointed Pawan Goenka
