First World Tsunami Awareness Day observed
The First World Tsunami Awareness Day (November 5)  is being observed today across the world. 
  • The theme for the year is Effective Education and Evacuation Drills.
  • The observance of the day will help to spread awareness among people across the world in matters related to the dangers of the tsunami. 


Govt launches scheme to provide free health check-ups to pregnant women
With an aim to reduce maternal and infant mortality, the government has rolled out a new scheme to provide fixed-day antenatal care to pregnant women on the ninth of every month.
  • The scheme — ‘Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan’ (PMSMA) — will provide free and comprehensive care on the ninth day of every month during the course of the pregnancy, especially to the poor.


President approves payment of 2% DA from July 1

President Pranab Mukherjee on 04 November 2016 approved the 2% hike in Dearness Allowance to central government employees, a move that could benefit 50.68 lakh employees and 54.24 lakh pensioners. 
  • DA is provided to employees and pensioners to minimise the impact of price rise on their earnings. Earlier this year, DA was hiked 6% to 125% of the basic pay.


Environment Ministry Constitutes Four-Member Team for Conservation of Loktak Lake
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has constituted a four-member team for conservation and management of Loktak Lake in Manipur.
  • The team will visit Loktak Lake and hold discussions with the State government, its concerned agencies and other stakeholders. The consultations will also include people living in the vicinity of the lake.


India, UNISDR sign Statement of Cooperation on Sendai Framework
India and United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction have signed a Statement of Cooperation during the ongoing Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) 2016.
  • According to the statement, India will partner with UNISDR to work towards strengthening the capacity of Asian countries in ensuring risk resilient development. It will also facilitate the sharing of knowledge and experiences, and collaborative efforts towards addressing critical regional challenges.


Centre imposes Rs 10,000 cr penalty on RIL and its partners
Government has slapped a nearly 10,000 crore rupee fine on Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and its partners BP and Niko for pumping out gas that flowed to the Krishna Godavari-D6 Block from an adjoining field owned by ONGC.
  • The Centre has given RIL a month to respond. The Oil Ministry, in a notice, to all the three partners sought 1.47 billion dollars for producing nearly 338 million British thermal unit in seven years ended March this year.


PETROTECH – 2016:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated India’s flagship biennial international oil and gas conference and exhibition, PETROTECH-2016.
  • Petrotech is Asia’s largest oil and gas event.
  • The theme for this event is “Hydrocarbons to fuel the future – Choices and Challenges”.


Paris agreement:
The “Paris Climate Agreement” has come into force on 4th November 2016.
  • India ratified the Paris Agreement on 2nd October 2016, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the Agreement has the support of majority of the countries.
  • Till date, 94 Parties have ratified it, of the 197 Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
  • The Paris Agreement’s entry into force comes a month after countries representing 55% of the world’s emissions committed to joining the deal.


Switzerland appoints Ranveer Singh as brand ambassador
Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh has been now named the first Indian ambassador for Switzerland Tourism.
  • Singh will now be in charge of promoting Switzerland Tourism’s campaign for 2017 – “Nature wants you back!”


Twitter India MD Parminder Singh resigns
Two days after Twitter India head Rishi Jaitly announced his exit, the microblogging network’s MD for India, Southeast Asia and Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). 
  • Singh’s departure marks a series of high-level changes in Twitter’s management, even as the company’s growth slows down globally and layoffs continue at its offices around the world.


Sonu Sood's Xuanzang is China's official entry to Oscars
China has selected historical-adventure film Xuanzang, which co-stars Bollywood actor Sonu Sood, as its official entry for the 89th Academy Awards.
  • The project is a part of the three-film agreement signed between India and China.
