The 128th anniversary of
Nobel laureate Bharat Ratna Sir CV Raman is being celebrated on 07 November.
- He was born on November 7, 1888 at Thiruvanaikaval
in Tiruchirapalli Tamil Nadu.
- Sir CV Raman won the Nobel prize in Physics 1930 for his discovery -Raman effect - the scattering of light which makes the sea and clear sky look blue.
New Delhi Declaration, Asian Regional Plan adopted at
AMCDRR 2016
The Asian Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR) 2016
recently came to an end with the adoption of the ‘New Delhi Declaration’ and
the ‘Asian Regional Plan for Implementation of the Sendai Framework’.
- The ‘New Delhi Declaration’ is a political statement spelling out the commitment of participating governments towards preventing and reducing disaster risk, and strengthening the resilience of communities, nations and the Asian region.
India rises to second place in
global business optimism index
The latest Grant Thornton
International Business Report for the July-September quarter has placed India
2nd on the global scale for business optimism.
- During the April-June 2016 period, India was ranked at the third position after being on top for two consecutive quarters. Indonesia took the top spot, with the Philippines coming in third.
‘Lost’ Chandrabhaga river
found in Odisha
Scientists from Indian
Institute of Technology (Kharagpur) claimed to have found evidence confirming
the existence of a mythical Indian river, Chandrabhaga.
- This is the second among such findings. In October 2016, KS Valdiya led expert committee had found that Saraswati River did exist. The IIT study aimed to verify this myth.
DRDO Signs MoU With IIT Delhi to Establish JATC
Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),
Delhi to establish a ‘Joint Advanced Technology Centre’ (JATC).
- The objective for creation of JATC is to undertake and facilitate multi-disciplinary directed basic and applied research in the jointly identified research verticals.
First S4A debt recast gets
approval
Construction major Hindustan
Construction Company (HCC) became India’s first firm to get debt recast under
RBI’s new Scheme for Sustainable Structuring of Stressed Assets (S4A).
- The RBI-mandated Overseeing Committee (OC) under the
S4A has approved HCC’s Rs. 5,000-crore debt recast passed by an ICICI
Bank-led joint lender forum in September 2016.
- Under this debt recast of HCC 52% of the debt (nearly Rs. 2,600 crore) was found to be sustainable and can be serviced as per original terms and conditions, including about interest rate and tenure.
AERA to hold talks on new airport tariff
The Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has initiated a process to
adopt a hybrid-till approach for calculating airport fees and the regulator is
slated to hold talks with airlines and airport operators next week to seek
their views.
- In this regard, the regulator has called for a meeting of airlines, airports, International Air Transport Association (IATA), Airports Authority of India (AAI), state governments, consumers’ organisation, fuel suppliers, and ground handling companies, among others.
International Agrobiodiversity Congress:
The 1st International Agrobiodiversity Congress – IAC 2016 – has begun at
New Delhi on Nov 6.
- This international Congress will initiate and
encourage a dialogue among relevant stakeholders – including farmers – to
better understand everyone’s role in agrobiodiversity management and the
conservation of genetic resources.
- It is co-organized by the Indian Society of Plant Genetic Resources and Bioversity International, a CGIAR Research Center headquartered in Rome, Italy. It received support from many Indian and international organisations engaged in the conservation and use of genetic resources.
Google Capital changes its
name to 'CapitalG'
Google Capital, the search
giant's venture arm that invests in growth-stage companies, has changed its
name to 'CapitalG'.
- The old GoogleCapital.com domain now forwards to
CapitalG.com, and Google Capital's Twitter account has announced that it’s
being retired in favour of a new @CapitalGTweets account.
- CapitalG’s new site confirms a previously unmentioned detail that it has invested in Snapchat.

India, Sri Lanka sign pact to
address fishermen crisis
India and Sri Lanka have
signed an agreement under which a hotline will be set up between officials of
the two countries to address the fishermen crisis.
- It also set up procedures to return arrested fishermen and have a minister-level meeting every few months on the issue.
Indian elected to UN International Law Commission:
Aniruddha Rajput, a young Indian lawyer, has been elected to the UN
International Law Commission. He bagged the highest number of votes in the
Asia-Pacific group.
- Aniruddha Rajput is among 34 individuals elected by the UN General Assembly as members of the International Law Commission that is tasked with the progressive development of international law and its codification.
RBI appoints M Rajeshwar Rao
as Executive Director
The Reserve Bank has
appointed M Rajeshwar Rao as Executive Director (ED) following G Mahalingam’s
voluntary retirement from the central bank.
- As Executive Director, Rao will look after
Department of Statistics and Information Management, Financial markets
Operations Department and International Department.
- Prior to taking over as the Executive Director, he was the Chief General Manager, Financial Markets Operations Department.
BJP's Avinash Khanna all set
to be appointed NHRC member
BJP Vice President Avinash
Rai Khanna is all set to be appointed as a member of National Human Rights
Commission (NHRC) with a high-level selection panel headed by Prime Minister
Narendra Modi clearing his name.
- The 55-year-old former Rajya Sabha member from Punjab and BJP in-charge of Jammu and Kashmir will perhaps be the first active politician to be appointed as a member of NHRC, which is headed by a former Chief Justice of India.

Kvitova on 6 November 2016 won the 2016 WTA Elite Singles Trophy.
- She defeated Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 6-4, 6-2 to
grab the title at Zhuhai, China. Venus Williams was the defending champion
for the title.
- However, she chose not to participate despite qualifying for the edition.
