The National Ayurveda Day is
being observed on 28-10-2016. The Ministry of AYUSH is organizing a day-long
national seminar on Prevention and Control of Diabetes through Ayurveda in New
Delhi. The Ministry will launch Mission Madhumeha through Ayurveda on this
occasion.
- The Mission Madhumeha will be implemented throughout the country through a specially designed National Treatment Protocol for effective management of Diabetes through Ayurveda.
Workshop On “Forest Rights Act, 2006 held
A Workshop on “Forest Rights Act, 2006 – its Implementation, benefits to
tribal and other traditional forest dwelling communities and its challenges”
was recently held in New Delhi as part of National Tribal Carnival – 2016.
- The Workshop was attended by approximately 250 delegates including Ministers from the States Members of Parliament, Members of State Legislatures and other dignitaries.
EPFO joins network of Common Services Centers
To expand the reach of convenience offered to EPF members, Employees
Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has joined the network of Common Services
Centers (CSC).
- In this regard, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between EPFO and CSC e-Governance Services India Limited (CSC SPV). The MoU is initially for a period of five years.

Depository
The Union Cabinet has accorded its approval for establishment and
operationalisation of a National Academic Depository (NAD).
- The decision aims at bringing another dimension and enhancement of the vision of Digital India.
Cabinet approves Agreement between India and Estonia on
the transfer of sentenced persons
The Union Cabinet has given its approval for signing and ratification of an
Agreement between India and Estonia on the transfer of sentenced persons.
- Signing the Agreement facilitates the Indian
prisoners imprisoned in Estonia or vice-versa to be near to their
families, for serving remaining part of their sentence and shall
facilitate their social rehabilitation.
- The transfer of such prisoners to their own native countries shall also facilitate their social rehabilitation.
Russia to destroy all of its chemical weapons by end of
2017
Russia has indicated that it will destroy all of its chemical weapons by
the end of next year – a year earlier than previously announced.
- As a signatory of the international Chemical Weapons
Convention, Russia already has destroyed about 93% of its chemical
weapons.
- In 1993, when Russia signed the CWC, the country declared that it possessed 40,000 tons of toxic chemicals.

Bashar wins 2016 Sakharov Prize
Two Yazidi women, Nadia
Murad Basee and Lamiya Aji Bashar, who escaped sexual enslavement by Islamic
State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Iraq, have won Europe's top human rights
award, the Sakharov prize.
- The announcement of the year's joint laureates was made following a decision by European Parliament on 27 October 2016. The Sakharov award ceremony will be held in Strasbourg on 14 December.
Antarctica’s Ross Sea declared
world’s largest marine reserve
Delegates from 24 countries
and the European Union have agreed that the Ross Sea in Antarctica will become
the world's largest marine protected area (MPA).
- Some 1.57 million sq km of the Southern Ocean will gain protection from fishing for 35 years.
Japan's Prince Mikasa, world's
oldest royal, dies at 100
Japanese Prince Mikasa,
uncle of Emperor Akihito, died at the age of 100 on Thursday, 27 October. He
was the oldest imperial family member in the world.
- Mikasa was the fifth in the line of succession to the Japanese throne Chrysanthemum, a metaphorical name for the monarchy.

October 2016 won the 2016 National Cadet Corp (NCC) National Games.
- Subhash Bhamre, Minister of State for Defence, presented trophies to the winners at the closing ceremony at Delhi Cantonment.
