December 4 : Indian Navy Day
45th Indian Navy Day was celebrated on December 4 to commemorate the launch of Operation Trident against Pakistan.
  • On December 4 1971, the Indian Navy carried out Operation Trident, which was a devastating attack on Pakistan Naval Headquarters of Karachi. The attack was successful as it sank a minesweeper, a destroyer and an ammunition supply ship.


Heart of Asia' conference has kicked off in Amritsar

The sixth 'Heart of Asia' ministerial conference has kicked off in Amritsar, Punjab from 03rd December 2016 to discuss peace, cooperation and economic development in Afghanistan.
  • Delegates from nearly 40 countries will participate in the conference organised on the theme 'Addressing Challenges, Achieving Prosperity'.
  • The main conference has been inaugurated jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani.
  • Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has lead the Indian delegation in place of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who is unwell.


India to train Qatar police to host FIFA World Cup 2022
India will train Qatar police for handling the security during the FIFA World Cup 2022 scheduled to be held in that country.
  • The training arrangement was agreed upon during a meeting between Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Nasser Bin Khalifa Al Thani and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in New Delhi.


Indian contestant Srinidhi Shetty wins Miss Supranational
India's representative Srinidhi Shetty has been crowned Miss Supranational 2016, an international beauty pageant. 
  • This marks the second time that India has won the pageant following the win by Asha Bhat in 2014. 
  • Srinidhi Shetty qualified for the competition after becoming the first runner-up at the Miss India Universe pageant earlier this year, where she won the title 'Miss Diva Supranational'.


Elon Musk named most admired leader in technology
Tesla and SpaceX Founder Elon Musk has been named the most admired leader in the technology space, in a survey conducted by VC firm First Round Capital involving over 700 startup founders. 
  • Amazon's Jeff Bezos emerged as the second most admired technology leader, followed by Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg and Apple's Steve Jobs.


IB Director says ‘no’ to extension
The chief of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) Dineshwar Sharma has turned down the government’s offer for an extension.
  • Dineshwar Sharma, a 1979-batch IPS officer of the Kerala cadre, was appointed IB Director in 2014 for a fixed tenure of two years by the present government. He retires on December 31.


Trump talks to Taiwanese President, angers China
The U.S President-elect Donald Trump signalled a potential rupture in the country’s China policy by holding a telephone conversation with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen.
  • He is the first American President or President-elect to talk to a Taiwanese President since 1979, when the U.S cut off diplomatic ties with the island while getting closer to China.




Bitcoin firm opens blockchain incubator in India
The team behind bitcoin company, GBMiners, said that it has started South Asia’s first Blockchain incubator called Satoshi Studios.
  • Named after Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious creator of bitcoin, the incubator is inviting applications from entrepreneurs working in South East Asia region.
  • The incubator will offer a three-month intensive residency programme for entrepreneurs in New Delhi.


Bolt bags unprecedented sixth Athlete-of-the-Year award
Sprint king Usain Bolt won an unprecedented sixth IAAF male Athlete-of-the-Year award, 
  • Ethiopian Almaz Ayana picking up the women’s award after her record-setting 10,000m gold in Rio.
  • Bolt, winner in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013, was rewarded for another blistering season that saw him claim three golds (100, 200 and 4x100 relay) at the Rio Olympics for the third consecutive Games.


PV Sindhu jumps 2 places in latest Badminton World Federation rankings
Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu jumped two places to achieve her career-best ranking of seven in the latest BWF World Ranking, while Saina Nehwal is also back in the top 10.
  • Sindhu, who clinched the China Open and then reached the finals at the Hong Open, has 68,699 ranking points. She will carry India hopes at the Dubai Super Series Final, a prestigious tournament she qualified for the first time.
