The Centre has proposed amending a law to empower States and allow
industries to pay wages by cheque or by direct credit into bank accounts.
- In this regard, the Union Labour ministry has
proposed changes to the Section 6 of the Payment of Wages Act of 1936.
- The proposal states that State governments may
specify the industry through official notifications where the payment of
wages shall be made through cheques or direct credit in bank accounts.
Govt. payments
above Rs. 5,000 to go digital
Finance Minister Arun
Jaitley has ordered all government departments to stop cash payments to vendors
and contractors for amounts above Rs. 5,000.
- Use e-payment facilities to pay all suppliers where
the dues are more than Rs 5,000 ‘in order to attain the goal of complete
digitisation of government payments’.
Panel suggests one-time licensing for drugs
The drugs technical
advisory board recently recommended one-time licensing for
manufacture and sales of drugs, with a rider that there be at least one annual
inspection and in cases where risk is high, more.
- At present, the renewal of licences for each
formulation rests with state regulators and is around three years.
MPs submit plea to remove Hyderabad High Court judge
Sixty-one Members of Parliament have submitted a petition to initiate
removal proceedings against Justice C.V. Nagarjuna Reddy of the Hyderabad High
Court, to Rajya Sabha chairperson, Hamid Ansari.
- Mr. Ansari is yet to give any ruling on it.
- Article 124(4) and the Judges Inquiry Act 1968
determine the procedure of removal of the judges
NIDHI Aapke Nikat programme:
Nidhi Aapke Niakat is a public outreach programme. It is held on the 10th of every
month in all the 122 field offices of Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) and is presided over by the officer-in-charge.
- It is an endeavour by the Organization to bring
together all its different stakeholders on a common platform.
- The various new initiatives in the interest of
employees/employers taken by the Organization are explained during the
programme.
Haryana bans
carrying of arms at weddings
The Haryana government has
banned carrying of arms at wedding functions after several incidents of
celebratory firing were reported.
- The ban has been imposed under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Firing in the air is also an offence punishable by six months’ imprisonment.
Ibrahimpur
declared cashless-transaction village
Ibrahimpur in Siddipet
district has become the first village in the Telangana State to totally turn to
cashless transactions.
- It has become the only village in the entire South
India to turn towards cashless transactions.
Konkan 16:
KONKAN 16 is the 2016 edition of the annual bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian
Navy and the Royal Navy. It is being held at Mumbai and
Goa.
- Exercise KONKAN, named after the Western
coastal region of India, was institutionalised in 2004. Since then, the exercise hosted in rotation by both the
Navies, has grown in complexity, scale and intensity.
NSE forms selection panel for new MD & CEO
The National Stock Exchange
has formed a fourmember selection committee to find a replacement for Chitra
Ramkrishna, who resigned as the MD & CEO on December 2.
The committee members are:
- former RBI Deputy Governor Usha Thorat,
- Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra, and
- two public interest directors of NSE — T.V. Mohandas
Pai and Dinesh Kanabar.
The board has already
appointed J. Ravichandran to hold charge of the office of CEO. The panel, after
due process, will recommend the names to the Nomination and Remuneration Committee
and the Board of NSE.

India’s largest public
sector trading body MMTC(Metals and Minerals Trading gold Corporation) tie-up
with the State Bank of India (SBI) to sell government-minted Indian Gold
Coin(24 Karat)which will be available in denominations of 5gm, 10gm and 20 gm
bar.

Jayalalithaa passes away
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister
Jayalalithaa Jayaraman passed away at a Chennai hospital last night (05th
December 2016), the 68-year old AIADMK supremo breathed her last at 11:30 PM at
the Apollo Hospital.
- She had suffered a massive cardiac arrest. Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital on September 22, 2016 following complaints of fever and dehydration, but she never fully recovered.

as new Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
After the demise of AIADMK
supremo & Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa at the Apollo Hospital,
her loyalist O Panneerselvam has been sworn in as Chief Minister at a sombre
ceremony at the Raj Bhawan along with all the ministers in the erstwhile
Jayalalithaa Cabinet.
- The AIADMK MLAs met at the party headquarters to elect Mr Panneerselvam as the successor to Jayalalithaa.

pro-European Alexander Van der Bellen has won the Austria's re-run presidential
election with around 53.5% votes.
- Bellen had won an earlier election in May by a narrow margin after which it was declared void by the Constitutional Court due to irregularities.

Uzbekistan's Prime Minister
Shavkat Mirziyoyev became the country's second president after winning 88.61%
vote in the first presidential election since the death of the authoritarian
leader and President Islam Karimov.
- Mr. Mirziyoyev scooped 88.6 per cent of the Sunday
votes.

Bhullar has been appointed the Chief of the Directorate General of Civil
Aviation (DGCA).
- At present, Bhullar, a 1986-batch IAS officer, is
working as an Additional Secretary in Civil Aviation Ministry.
- He was also holding the additional charge of the DGCA.

tweet of 2016 or the Golden Tweet of the year was Virat Kohli's tweet in
support of Anushka Sharma that was retweeted over 39,000 times and liked by
1,07,117 users in which he shamed people for trolling her non-stop.
- The top moment on Twitter for the year was the
announcement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's demonetisation scheme after
which the platform recorded 6,50,000 Tweets in the 24 hours following the
announcement.
- The most popular hashtag was #Rio2016 using which Indians celebrated the performance of Indian athletes at the Olympic games.
