Central team to study Tirunelveli’s segregation of plastic waste

A team from the Union Ministry of Urban Development will visit Tirunelveli Corporation on February 1 to study the successful strategy of dedicating Wednesday of every week for collecting non-degradable plastic waste separately from residents.
Details:
  • In order to put the onus of segregation of waste at source on residents, the Corporation decided to dedicate every Wednesday for collecting plastic waste separately.

  • Residents were instructed to segregate the non-degradable waste to be handed over to conservancy workers during their house visit on the fourth day of the week. Moreover, frequent raids are conducted in shops where plastic carry bags and plastic cups are either sold or used.
  • This strategy – raid in commercial establishments and residents’ cooperation -- has proved to be a roaring success with the Corporation collecting over 47 tonnes of plastic waste from residents in the first four Wednesdays.
  • This drive is that incidents of blockage in underground drainage have come down by 30%.
  • The plastic waste collected from residents has become an additional source of income to the urban local body that sells it to traders while the degradable waste is converted into manure.
