The Ministry of Women and Child Development has
developed a reader titled “Raising Happy Children
and Providing Safe Childhoods”.
- It
provides advisory guidelines to parents, teachers and community to protect
children from being involved in delinquent behavior through early
detection, counselling and positive engagement.
- It
draws upon basic principles laid down in the Juvenile Justice (Care and
Protection of Children) Act 2015 which provides a strong formal framework
for dealing with children in conflict with the law throughout the criminal
justice process.
The government has launched the Saral Eindhan
Vitaran Application (SEVA), developed in-house
by Coal India Limited (CIL) for power sector consumers.
- SEVA is
a part of ‘Digital India’ initiative, which is aimed at increasing the Consumer Connect as well as the
Transparency and Accountability in Coal dispatch.
- The
SEVA Dashboard provides summary of quantity of coal dispatched along with
grades for the given day, month, and the latest yearly updates as well. It
also provides information on rake movement including latest status of
indents of rake, allotment and loading. This would help consumers making
advance logistics planning.
President Pranab Mukherjee has given his assent
to the long-pending Prohibition of Child Marriage (Karnataka amendment) Bill,
2016, giving greater powers to the police and increasing the penalty for child
marriage.
- The
Bill was drafted based on the recommendations of a core committee headed
by Shivaraj V. Patil, former Supreme Court judge. Karnataka is among the
States that record a high number of child marriages in the country (about
23% of the total, according to a recent survey).
- The
amended Bill seeks to ensure zero tolerance towards child marriage,
granting powers to policemen and enhancing penalties for those attending
wedding ceremonies of minors.
The Maharashtra government has decided to
form ‘good morning’ squads to monitor and prevent open defecation in
villages and districts across the state.
- These squads will comprise representatives of local
bodies, self-help groups, NGOs, students and social workers working in the
area of sanitation and cleanliness.
A three-day session of the Tripura Assembly got underway on
Tuesday chiefly to endorse the GST Bill. The session will also transact some
other business, including the question hour. Finance Minister Bhanulal Saha
introduced the Bill, which is expected to be passed unanimously.
Urgyen Trinley Dorje, the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa,
may be allowed to visit any place in the country, except Sikkim, without seeking
the government’s permission. The Home Ministry has moved the proposal before
the Cabinet Committee on Security.
- The
move assumes significance in the wake of China’s repeated warnings over
the recent Northeast visit of the Dalai Lama, who Beijing describes as a
“separatist” for spearheading the Tibetan freedom movement.
In a rare feat,
a young Indian IAS officer, Haulianlal Guite, who hails from Manipur
state has recently published a book titled "Confessions of a dying
mind: the blind faith of atheism" in New Delhi.
- The
book was unveiled by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju in presence of
David Syiemlieth, Chairman, UPSC in august gathering at Civil
Services Officers' Institute.
In a first, Ministry of Environment, Forest and
Climate Change, along with the UN Environment OzonAction’s Compliance
Assistance Programme, recently organized an “Ozone2Climate” Technology Roadshow, post Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol,
on the sidelines of the South Asia National Ozone Officers Annual Network
Meeting – 2017 in Agra.
- Over
200 refrigerant technicians, ozone officers, business representatives and
government officials attended the Roadshow.
- The
Technology Roadshow was organized for the first time as part of the annual
network meeting for Ozone Officers of South Asia.
- The
“Ozone2Climate Technology Roadshow” had 13 exhibitors that promoted ozone
and climate-friendly alternative technologies to HCFCs and HFCs in the
refrigeration and air-conditioning (RAC) sector.
Japan is going
to build a war museum at the hillock at Maiba Lokpa in Bishnupur
district in Manipur where a Japanese camp was located during
World War II.
- The Japanese ambassador Kenji Hiramatsu, has stated that about 70,000 Japanese soldiers had died in battles from March to June 1944 in Imphal and Kohima.
Martial
rule imposed in south Philippines
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte declared
martial rule for 60 days in the country’s south and cut short a visit to Moscow
on Tuesday after Muslim extremists allied with the Islamic State laid siege to
a city in the southern part of the country.
Japan’s lower house on Tuesday approved a draft
law dubbed the “conspiracy Bill”.
- If passed by the upper house, it will allow authorities punish those found guilty of planning serious crimes. Critics say it can be used to undermine civil liberties.
Google Unleashes AlphaGo in China:
AlphaGo is a narrow AI, computer program
developed by Alphabet Inc.’s Google DeepMind in London to play the board game
Go. In October 2015, it became the first Computer Go program to beat a human
professional Go player without handicaps on a full-sized 19×19 board.
- AlphaGo’s
algorithm uses a Monte Carlo tree
search to find its moves based on knowledge previously “learned” by
machine learning, specifically by an artificial neural network (a deep
learning method) by extensive training, both from human and computer play.
Karnataka
Bank pact with HDFC Asset Management
Karnataka Bank
Ltd has entered into a distribution agreement to sell the mutual fund
products of HDFC Capital Asset Management Ltd (HDFCAML) during
exchanged the memorandum of understanding in Mangaluru, Karnataka.
- Investment in mutual funds will provide an opportunity
to those customers who are uncomfortable about investing directly in stock
markets as this tie-up will give HDFCAML an opportunity to expand its base
in these centers.
Tata
appoints new legal chief
A day after
appointing a new Chief Financial Officer Saurabh Agrawal, Tata Sons has
appointed a new legal head.
- The group has appointed Shuva Mandal as
the Group General Counsel after incumbent Bharat Vasani quit the
role.
- Mandal will assume in July 2017. Vasani will continue with the group as Legal Adviser to the Chairman’s office.
Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' resigned as Nepal Prime Minister

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba to become the next Prime
Minister.
- The resignation is to honor an accord signed in August
2016 when Prachanda was elected the prime minister with Deuba's support.
Tedros
Adhanom Ghebreyesus is the new WHO Chief
Tedros Adhanom
Ghebreyesus, a former Ethiopian health minister, has been chosen to head
the World Health Organisation (WHO) and is the first African to do so
since the creation of the United Nations agency in 1948.
- He will begin his five-year term on 1 July 2017. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has replaced Margret Chan who steps down after ten years as the WHO chief.

Actor Sir
Roger Moore, best known for playing James Bond, has died at age 89.
He played the famous spy in seven Bond films including Live and Let Die and A View to a Kill.

Sangakkara to retire from First Class cricket
