New book celebrates the Reang of Tripura

Indian researchers develop 3D bioprinted cartilage
For the first time, Indian researchers have been able to achieve a measure of success in developing cartilages that are molecularly similar to the ones seen in human knees.
  • While scientists attempting to tissue-engineer cartilage have focussed on growing cells on porous scaffolds, in a paradigm shift, a team led by Prof. Sourabh Ghosh from the Department of Textile Technology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has been successful in 3D bioprinting of cartilage using a bioink.
  • The bioink has high concentration of bone-marrow derived cartilage stem cells, silk proteins and a few factors. The chemical composition of the bioink supports cell growth and long-term survival of the cells. The cartilage developed in the lab has remained physically stable for up to six weeks. The results of the study were published in the journal Bioprinting.

U.S. plans first ICBM defence test
Preparing for North Korea’s growing threat, U.S. will try to shoot down an intercontinental-range missile for the first time in a test next week. The goal is to more closely simulate a North Korean ICBM aimed at the U.S. homeland.
  • The American interceptor has a spotty track record, succeeding in nine of 17 attempts against missiles of less-than-intercontinental range since 1999. The most recent test, in June 2014, was a success, but that followed three straight failures.
  • The system has evolved from the multibillion-dollar effort triggered by President Ronald Reagan’s 1983 push for a “Star Wars” solution to ballistic missile threats during the Cold War when the Soviet Union was the only major worry.

Buddhists in Myanmar defy ban
The State Sangha Maha Nayaka, the Myanmar’s highest Buddhist institution, officially banned Ma Ba Tha for motivating riots largely targeting Myanmar’s Muslim minority.
  • Ma Ba Tha and its high-profile leading monk, Wirathu, have been accused of summoning anti-Islamic preaching and stirring up mob violence in Buddhist-majority Myanmar, causing deaths of Muslims and destruction of their property.

A fish that can father a near clone of itself
Scientists have discovered a fish carrying genes only from its father in the nucleus of its cells. Found in a type of fish called Squalius alburnoides , which normally inhabits rivers in Portugal or Spain.
  • This is the first documented instance in vertebrates of a father producing a near clone of itself through sexual reproduction — a rare phenomenon called androgenesis, the researchers reported in the journal Royal Society Open Science .

Zbigniew Brzezinski, NSA to Jimmy Carter, dies at 89
Zbigniew Brzezinski, the hawkish strategic theorist who was National Security Adviser to President Jimmy Carter in the tumultuous years of the Iran hostage crisis and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the late 1970s, died
  • Brzezinski was also a prime mover behind the commando mission sent to rescue the U.S. hostages held by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s revolutionary forces in Iran after the overthrow of the Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi — a disastrous desert expedition in April 1980 that claimed eight lives and never reached Tehran.
