World Environment Day (WED) is the biggest
annual event for positive environmental action and takes place every on 5
June. This year’s host country is Canada.
Aadhaar must for kerosene subsidy, Atal Pension Yojana
Aadhaar has now been made mandatory to get
subsidy on kerosene and benefits of the Atal Pension Yojana.
- Those
getting kerosene subsidy or subscribing to the pension scheme will be
required to furnish proof of possession of the unique ID or undergo the
enrolment process to get the benefits, officials said on Sunday.
- The
last date to get Aadhaar or enrol for getting it is September 30 in the
case of the kerosene subsidy. For the pension scheme, the deadline is June
15.
- The
decision to make Aadhaar mandatory for these two schemes is expected to
prevent leakages.
Tiny
Orang roars on tiger density
According to a
survey, Orang tiger reserve in Assam, which has the smallest core, is host to
28 big cats, thus having the highest density nationally. The count was revealed during phase IV of the all-India
tiger estimation programme of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
- Spread
over Darrang and Sonitpur districts and notified in February 2016, Orang
Tiger Reserve is the 49th in the country.
- It has the smallest core of 78.28 sq. km.
- It
is located on the north bank of the Brahmaputra River.
India
major defence partner: U.S.
Defence
Secretary James Mattis recently said that the U.S. recognises India as a major
defence partner partly out of respect for New Delhi’s indispensable role in
maintaining stability in the Indian Ocean.
- In
a significant development, the US recognised India as a “major defence
partner” in June 2016, which means that for defence related trade and
technology transfer the country would now be treated at par with America’s
closest allies.
Only 5 MPs clock 100% attendance in Lok Sabha
Only five of the 545 members clocked 100%
attendance in the current Lok Sabha.
Bhairon Prasad Mishra, MP for Banda, Uttar
Pradesh, participated in 1,468 debates and discussions, the highest, and has
100% attendance.
- The
other four MPs who have cent per cent attendance are BJD MP Kulmani Samal
(Jagatsinghpur) and BJP MPs Gopal Shetty (North Mumbai), Kirit Solanki
(Ahmedabad West) and Ramesh Chander Kaushik (Sonipat).
- Twenty-two
lawmakers from the Lower House attended only half the sittings or fewer.
- Records
of the Prime Minister and some Ministers are not available as it was not
mandatory for them to sign the attendance register.
- Mallikarjun
Kharge, who is the Leader of the Congress in the House, recorded 92%
attendance.
Citizen
scientists find cold new world near solar system
A brown dwarf
over 100 light years away from the Sun has been discovered using a new citizen
science tool that helps astronomers pinpoint new worlds lurking in the outer
reaches of our solar system. These sightings were made by the Backyard Worlds
volunteers.
- The
Backyard Worlds project lets anyone with a computer and an Internet
connection flip through images taken by NASA’s Wide Field Infrared Survey
Explorer (WISE) spacecraft.
- Brown
dwarfs are objects which have a size between that of a giant planet like
Jupiter and that of a small star.
EVMs get vote of confidence
The electronic voting machine (EVM) went
unchallenged, with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) deciding only to
understand its functioning and the Nationalist Congress Party opting out on
grounds that the Election Commission did not provide the memory and battery
numbers of machines not even four days in advance.
Mazaalai-
first university satellite
It is the
first university satellite of Mongolia named after the Mongolian endangered
Gobi bear – Mazaalai. The satellite has been designed by students.
It was sent
off into space in the United States recently. The satellite accompanied the
“SpaceX Falcon 9” rocket. The project under which the satellite was launched is
supported by UNESCO and Japan.
- Mongolia
will be able to contact the satellite which will be sent off 400km away
from the earth 5-6 times a day.
AP's Vizianagaram bags MGNREGA national award
The Ministry of Rural Development has
selected Vizianagaram district in Andhra Pradesh as one among the 17
districts across the nation for the MGNREGA annual award
- The
award was given for effective implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi
National Rural Employment Guarantee (MGNREGA) Act during 2015-16.
Mumbai Metro One ties up with Google Maps
Reliance Infrastructure-promoted Mumbai
Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) has partnered with Google to display its
services in Google Maps application.
- To bring convenience for the commuters, MMOPL has
collaborated with Google Maps to publish authentic timetable
information and associated geographic information of the Metro One
stations in the app.
India successfully test-fires 1st all weather
tracked-chassis QR-SAM
India has successfully test-fired its first all
weather tracked-chassis Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile
(QR-SAM) from a mobile launcher at Integrated Test Range at Chandipur in
Odisha.
- The
test was carried out for validating various parameters of the
sophisticated weapon system to further strengthen its air defence system.
Federal Bank eyes slice of digital pie
Federal Bank plans to reach out to more than one
lakh merchants for Unified Payments Interface-based transactions this financial
year from the current 20,000.
- The
merchants will use UPI point-of-sale machines, mobile app or web app for
transactions.
- Unified
Payments Interface (UPI) is a system that powers multiple bank accounts
into a single mobile application (of any participating bank), merging
several banking features, seamless fund routing and merchant payments into
one.
RCom-Aircel merged wireless company to be called
Aircom
Reliance Communications (RCom) Chairman Anil
Ambani has announced that the merged entities of RCom and Aircel will be called
Aircom. These merged entities are Reliance Communications and Maxis
Communications Berhad (MCB).
- The
merged company will be one of India’s largest private sector companies. It
will have an asset base of over 65000 crore rupees and net worth of 35000
crore rupees.
Google to pay $200,000 in hunt for Android bugs
Google has now increased the bounty for finding a
bug in the Android operating system to as much as $200,000.
- According
to cyber security firm Check Point, dozens of malicious apps were downloaded
between 4.5 million to 18.5 million times from the Play Store. Some of the
malware-affected apps have been discovered residing on the online store
for several years.
- Days
after a malware called “Judy” hit over 36.5 million Android-based phones,
- “Judy”
is only one example of how an open and free mobile operating system (OS)
can be exploited by malicious app developers.
India slips to 45th spot in IMD's World
Competitiveness list
India has been ranked 45th, down four
notches from last year, in terms of competitiveness in the annual rankings
compiled by IMD which saw Hong Kong topping the list.
- The
list was compiled by the International Institute for Management
Development's (IMD) World Competitiveness Center.
- Switzerland
and Singapore were ranked second and third respectively, with the USA
at the fourth spot.
Character actor Shivraj passes away
Character actor Shivraj, who was one of the most
recognisable faces in the Hindi cinema of the 1950s and the 60s, died.
- He
is present as the foster father in two of Hindi cinema’s most beloved lost
and found epics — in Nasir Hussain’s Yaadon

B Sai Praneeth has clinched

Bangkok.
- In
April, the ward of national coach Pullela Gopichand had defeated Kidambi
Srikanth in an all-Indian Singapore Open Grand Prix final to claim his
maiden Grand Prix title.
Chethan claims high jump gold
B. Chethan of Karnataka won the men’s high jump
at 2.18 metres in the 21st Federation Cup athletics championships at the Netaji
Subhash National Institute of Sports Complex.
- Chethan
managed to pip Ajay Kumar for gold as he cleared the height on his first
attempt.
Ganeshan Neelakanta Iyer first Indian to be
inducted in ITTF URC
Ganeshan Neelakanta Iyer, the only assigned
competition manager of International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF),
has become the first Indian to be nominated as a member of the Umpires and
Referees Committee (URC).
- Ganeshan’s term as URC member is for a period of two years. Ganeshan is also the chairman of the South Asian Federation technical committee and a member of the Technical Committee of the Commonwealth Table Tennis Federation.
