Indian Space
Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully launched the country’s heaviest
rocket – Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle-Mark III (GSLV-Mk III) – along
with a communications satellite GSAT-19. GSAT-19 communications satellite is
the heaviest to be lifted by an Indian rocket till date – to an altitude of
around 179km above the Earth.
- The
GSLV Mk III D1 is a three-stage vehicle with indigenous cryogenic upper
stage engine+ designed to carry heavier communication satellites into the
Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
- The
GSAT-19, with a lifespan of 10 years, is a multi-beam satellite that will
carry Ka and Ku-band payload along with a Geostationary Radiation Spectrometer
(GRASP) payload to monitor and study the nature of the charged particles
and influence of space radiation on spacecraft and electronic components.
India’s first public bicycle sharing project
launched in Mysuru
Chief Minister of Karnataka Siddaramaiah has
recently launched India’s first public bicycle sharing (PBS)
initiative 'Trin Trin' in Mysuru.
- The
World Bank, Global Environmental Fund, and state govt have jointly funded
the initiative.
- Mysuru
is the first city in India to have a public bicycle sharing system. A
total of 450 bicycles can be borrowed from 48 docking stations set up
across the City for a nominal fee.
Handbook,
Module & Guidelines on Safe Childhood Programme for Gram Panchayats
A Handbook
along with Module & Guidelines on protection of Child Rights at Gram
Panchayat level was recently released jointly by National Commission for
Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Ministry of Panchayati Raj and UNICEF.
- The Handbook, Module & Guidelines will be useful for the functionaries of the Panchayati Raj Institutions in protecting the rights of children at the village level.
MoU
signed between Central Industrial Security Force & National Skill
Development Corporation
The Central
Industrial Security Force (CISF), Ministry of Home Affairs and the National
Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) & National Skill Development Fund
(NSDF), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, have signed a
Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
- The
MoU provides that CISF, NSDC and NSDF shall work together at CISF units
all across the country where Family Welfare Centres are functional and
other CISF locations with an objective to impart skill development
programs under the Skill India Mission for the purpose of implementation
of CISF Multi Skill Development Institute Projects.
IMD to give malaria, chikungunya alerts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is
working on a forecasting system to give 15-day warnings on the likelihood of a
malaria or chikungunya outbreak, over different regions.
- A
service was part of a larger initiative by the department to provide
custom, weather-related information to cope with challenges of a global
warming and its associated impact of weather.
- The
IMD’s National Climate Centre in Pune, traditionally tasked with
forecasting the monsoon and documenting monsoon-related statistics, was
being reorganised to provide such climate services.
India’s
biodiversity riches grow by 499 species
As per the
latest reports by ZSI and BSI, 499 new species have been discovered in last one
year in the country.
- Of
these, 313 species are animal species and 186 are plants species. Of the
new animal species, 258 are invertebrates and 55 vertebrates. As many as
97 species of insects, 27 of fish, 12 species of amphibians, 10 of
Platyhelminthes, nine of Crustacea and six of reptiles have been
discovered and described by the scientists.
- There are 61 species of moths and butterflies (order Lepidoptera) and 38 of beetles (Coloeptera).
India’s
first Rural LED Street Lighting Project in Andhra Pradesh:
Government of
India, through the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) under the Ministry
of Power, would be retrofitting 10 lakh conventional street lights with LED
lights in Gram Panchayats of 7 districts in Andhra Pradesh.
- This
is the first project for rural LED street lighting in the country under
the Government of India’s Street Lighting National Project (SLNP).
- This
replacement drive in rural areas will help the gram panchayats to
cumulatively save approximately 147 million units of electricity annually
and lead to reduction of 12 crore tonnes of CO2.
Telangana launches single-woman pension scheme,
first in India
Telangana government has recently
launched the single-women pensions scheme across the state. Single
women will be given Rs 1,000 per month. It is the first such scheme in India.
- The
government had also increased the Kalyana Laxmi and Shaadi Mubarak
scheme amount from Rs50,116 to Rs75,116. Children of single women
would be admitted into all Telangana Residential Educational Institutions
without having to write an examination or waiting for the lottery system.

World’s Energy
Leaders have gathered in Beijing for second Mission Innovation Ministerial and
8th Clean Energy Ministerial. An Indian delegation led by Dr. Harsh Vardhan,
Minister for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences and Environment, Forest
& Climate Change will be participating in the conferences.
- MI
was announced on November 30, 2015 by the leaders of 20 countries that
have a shared desire to accelerate global clean energy innovation during
COPE 21 in Paris.
- The
‘Mission Innovation’ (MI) is an effort to accelerate public and private
global clean energy innovation, including through participating countries
doubling their respective clean energy research and development
investment.
Five Arab powers sever ties with Qatar
The Arab world’s strongest powers cut ties with
Qatar on Monday over alleged support for Islamists and Iran, reopening a
festering wound two weeks after U.S. President Donald Trump’s demand for Muslim
states to fight terrorism.
- Saudi
Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain cut relations with
Qatar in a coordinated move. Yemen, Libya’s eastern-based government and
the Maldives joined in later.
Nepal, China ink mega hydropower agreement
Nepal has signed an agreement with a Chinese
company to build the largest hydroelectric plant in the impoverished landlocked
country, which suffers from a chronic energy shortage.
- Nepal’s
Energy Minister Janardan Sharma on Sunday signed the agreement for the
China Gezhouba Group Corporation to build the long-mooted 1,200 megawatt
Budhi-Gandaki hydroelectric project.
Afghanistan set to host
Kabul Process summit
The Afghan government says it’s ready to host the
socalled Kabul Process, in which security issues will be discussed among
Afghans and officials from the region and around the world.
- Foreign
Ministry spokesman Shakib Mustaghni said the government will host the
first meeting on June 6.
TRAI launches three new apps
Telecom Regulatory Authority of India
(TRAI) has recently launched three new apps to help customers rate quality
of services, speed and performance.
- The three new apps are Mycall app, MySpeed app
and 'Do not disturb (DND 2.0)' app.
- The apps are being launched with the motive that
there is more transparency between the consumers and the service
providers.
NSE launches international exchange at GIFT City
Leading bourse National Stock Exchange
(NSE) launched its international exchange in the Gujarat
International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). NSE IFSC Ltd, the global exchange
promoted by NSE, will remain operational for a longer period than NSE during a
trading day.
- All
the trades will be cleared and settled through NSE IFSC Clearing
Corporations Ltd. Several products from the
currency, commodity and equity segments are expected to get
listed on the new exchange which may also introduce other innovative products
in line with Sebi regulations.

Jain appointed as New DG NWDA
Dr. Sharad
Kumar Jain has been appointed as the Director General of National Water
Development Agency (NWDA) under Ministry of Water Resources, River Development
and Ganga Rejuvenation.
- NWDA
is the agency of the Union Ministry of Water Resources. It was set up in
July, 1982 as autonomous society under the
Societies Registration Act, 1860.
'Ministry of Utmost Happiness' authored by
Arundhati Roy launched
The book “The Ministry of Utmost
Happiness” has been authored by Arundhati Roy, was released recently.
- It is fiction-based novel and will be published by Hamish Hamilton UK and Penguin India.
