Narendra Modi government to scrap UGC, AICTE soon with HEERA
The University Grants Commission (UGC) and All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) will soon be a thing of the past as the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre is planning to replace the two education regulators with a new Higher Education Regulator.
  • This is being done to bring one single education regulator named HEERA in place. Higher Education Empowerment Regulation Agency or HEERA is the name of the new proposed regulator. 


Govt. has launched ‘Skill for Life, Save a Life’ initiative
The government has launched the ‘Skill for Life, Save a Life’ initiative.
  • ‘Skills for Life, Save a Life’ Initiative’ aims to upscale the quantity and quality of trained professionals in the healthcare system
  • Under this initiative various courses are planned to be initiated targeting specific competencies for healthcare professionals as well as for general public.


National trust organized Inclusive India Initiative
The National Trust under Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment in collaboration with key partners recently organised the conference “Inclusive India Initiative: Towards an Inclusive India” for intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs). 
  • The ‘Inclusive India Initiative’ of National Trust is specifically catering to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities; with an objective to include these people in the mainstream and in all important aspects of social life, namely education, employment and community ‘Inclusive India’ in about changing the attitudes.


Child-friendly HIV drug gets govt. nod
The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has registered the child-friendly HIV drug in oral pellet form, ending months of uncertainty for the HIV community. 
  • This has opened up crucial supplies from Cipla Pharmaceuticals, a market leader in the HIV segment, to the National AIDS Control Programme (NACO), which had been struggling to source quality assured paediatric formulations of the drug.


 ‘Hottest’ planet in universe discovered
Scientists have discovered the hottest known planet located 650 light years from Earth, which is warmer than most stars in the universe and sports a giant, glowing gas tail like a comet.
  • The Jupiter-like planet, named KELT-9b, orbits a massive star KELT-9 every day and a half.


India signs agreement with Sri Lanka for developing Railway sector
India signed an agreement to provide fresh assistance of 318 million US Dollar credit line to Sri Lanka for the development of the railway sector in the country.
  • The agreement was signed in Colombo amidst the presence of senior officials of Sri Lanka’s finance and transport ministries.


India Signs Loan Agreement with the World Bank for the project "Assam Citizen Centric Service Delivery" 
An agreement for International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) Credit of USD 39.2 Million from World Bank for the project 'Assam Citizen Centric Service Delivery' was signed recently.
  • The loan agreement was signed by Shri Raj Kumar, Joint Secretary (MI), Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Government of India and Mr. Hisham Abdo, Manager, Operations (India) on behalf of the World Bank.
  • The program size is USD 49 million, of which USD 39.2 million will be financed by the Bank, and the remaining amount will be funded out of State Budget.


Sher Bahadur Deuba elected Nepal’s Prime Minister for the fourth time
Veteran Nepalese politician Sher Bahadur Deuba was elected as Nepal’s Prime Minister for the fourth time. 
  • He secured 388 votes in his favor and 170 votes against him. A total of 558 were cast during the voting. He needed 297 votes in the 593-strong Parliament to prove his majority. 
  • The Nepali Congress leader has become the 40th Prime Minister of Nepal.


Montenegro becomes NATO’s 29th member 
Montenegro has officially joined North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and hence became the 29th member country of NATO. Montenegro Foreign Minister Srdjan Darmanovic submitted the official accession papers in a ceremony at the US State Department.
  • The move came in the face of bitter opposition from Russia, which says NATO’s steady expansion into the former communist states of Eastern Europe threatens its own security and cannot go unchallenged.


Centre notifies rules on capital gains tax
The Income Tax Department has notified rules specifying equity transactions that will attract capital gains tax if securities transaction tax (STT) was not paid on them. 
  • The move comes after the Finance Act 2017 that aimed to curb the practice of declaring unaccounted income as exempt long-term capital gain by entering into sham transactions.
  • This notification shall come into force with effect from April 1, 2018, and shall accordingly apply to assessment year 2018-19 and subsequent assessment years.


Vijaya Bank set to develop 100 digital villages 
Vijaya Bank is going to develop as many as 100 digital villages in various States of the country as part of its initiative to promote digital banking among the rural population.
  • Speaking on the sidelines of the inauguration of the bank’s 2031st ATM at Pandit Nehru Bus Station in the Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, Bank Executive Director B.S. Rama Rao stated that Vijaya Bank is the only public sector financial institution to develop digital villages with focus on rural areas and it has already developed five villages including the one in Guntur district.


CCI clears Airtel-Telenor merger
Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved the proposed merger of Telenor (India) Communications with the Airtel. 
  • On June 1, Bharti Airtel had received the approval of SEBI, BSE and NSE for the merger.


NHB approves merger between Aadhar Housing Finance and DHFL Vysya Housing Finance
The proposed merger between Aadhar Housing Finance and DHFL Vysya Housing Finance has hit the final lap with it got the nod from housing finance regulator National Housing Bank (NHB). 
  • Aadhar Housing Finance Chief Executive Officer Deo Shankar Tripathi stated that it had applied to National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) for the next stage approval.
  • Both the companies are owned by Wadhawan family promoted Wadhawan Global Capital Pvt Ltd. International Finance Corporation owns 20% in Aadhar Housing, while DHFL Vysya is fully owned by Wadhawan family.


Hoshiar Singh appointed chief of copyrights office 
Senior bureaucrat Hoshiar Singh has been appointed as Registrar of Copyrights.
  • The Office of Copyrights, under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, is mandated to protect the music and film industry besides addressing its concerns, among others.


Ace Parliamentarian Era Sezhiyan dead
Veteran Parliamentarian Era Sezhiyan, highly regarded as a Constitutionalist who recommended the abolition of the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), died.
  • Sezhiyan republished the report of the Shah Commission constituted to go into various kinds of excesses committed during the Emergency under the title ‘Shah Commission Report Lost and Regained’.


Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi dies aged 82
Saudi arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi, a tycoon known for his lavish billionaire lifestyle and far-reaching international connections, has died in London at the age of 82.
  • U.S.-educated Khashoggi brokered arms deals around the world, earning handsome commissions and operating in a shady business while partying with global elites.
