World Day for International
Justice, also referred to as Day of International Criminal
Justice or International Justice Day is an international
day celebrated throughout the world on July 17 as part of an effort to
recognize the emerging system of international criminal justice.
- July 17 was chosen because it is the anniversary of
the adoption of the Rome Statute, the
treaty that created the International Criminal Court.
- On 1 June 2010, at the Review Conference of the Rome Statute held in Kampala
(Uganda), the Assembly of State Parties decided to celebrate 17 July as
the Day of International Criminal Justice.
Govt. panel to study cow
derivatives
The government has set up a
19-member panel, including three members linked to the RSS and VHP, to carry
out what it says will be scientifically validated research on cow derivatives
including its urine, and their benefits.
- The panel Headed by Science and Technology Minister
Harsh Vardhan.
- The committee will select projects that can help
scientifically validate the benefits of panchgavya — the concoction of cow
dung, cow urine, milk, curd and ghee — in various spheres such as
nutrition, health and agriculture.
Ramakrishna Math institutions
to stay out of EPFO coverage
Institutions under the
Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission will continue to remain outside the
purview of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) even as the
Central government took a decision two years back to extend social security
benefits to workers in all such charitable and religious trusts.
- The education institutions and hospitals run under
Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission have been exempted from the
EPFO’s coverage since 1982.
Indonesia renames part of
South China Sea
Indonesia has named waters
in its exclusive economic zone that overlap with China’s expansive
claim to the South China Sea as the North Natuna Sea.
- The part of the renamed area falls
in China’s “nine-dash line” waters extending hundreds of miles to the
south and east of China’s island province Hainan.
UN agency sets up support
centre in Punjab
World Intellectual Property Organization, a
specialised agency of the United Nations, has decided to set up its first
Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) in India at the Punjab State
Council for Science and Technology (PSCST).
- The TISC will give access to international standard
intellectual property facilities to the innovators of the region.
- The setting up of TISC would facilitate access to
international standard intellectual property facilities to the innovators
of the region in terms of database access, training, case studies, best
practices of other countries, experience sharing platform, IP
commercialization and technology transfer and hence strengthening the
innovation ecosystem in this part of the country.

Samsung Pay Mini
Digital payments
company MobiKwik has partnered Samsung Pay, under which
consumers will be able to make payments with a single tap using select Samsung
handsets.
- Samsung had unveiled a 'Mini' version of the platform that integrates UPI and mobile wallets to work on mid-range priced smartphones.
Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli
to be the new Chief Justice of Nepal
Justice Gopal Prasad
Parajuli will be the new Chief Justice of Nepal.
The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) unanimously
endorsed Justice Parajuli’s name for the post of Chief Justice of Supreme
Court.
- After endorsement by PHSC the President will now
appoint him as the Chief Justice. He will head the Judiciary till April
28, 2018.
Sangita Kalanidhi award for
Ravikiran
Chitraveena maestro N.
Ravikiran, who as a child prodigy won the scholarship of the Music Academy in
1969, has been selected for this year’s Sangita Kalanidhi award of the
institution.
- He will preside over the 91st annual conference to
be held between December 15, 2017 and January 1, 2018. The award will be
conferred on him on January 1, on the day of sadas.
- The Academy’s Sangita Kala Acharya awards will be
given to mridangist V. Kamalakar Rao and vocalist Radha Namboodhiri.
- Lakshmi Viswanathan will get the Nritya Kalanidhi
award on the day of inauguration of the dance festival on January 3.
Shri R K Pachnanda takes
charge as Director General, ITBP
Shri R K Pachnanda, an IPS
officer, took charge as the new Director General of Indo-Tibetan Border
Police (ITBP), recently.
- Shri Krishna Chaudhary, DG who retired on
superannuation, handed over the customary baton to Shri
Pachnanda. Shri Pachnanda is the 29th Chief of the ITBP.
Udta Punjab wins big at IIFA
awards
The 18th edition of the
International Indian Film Academy awards ended on a high with Udta
Punjab winning four awards.
- Neerja and Ae
Dil Hai Mushkil won three awards each.
- Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt walked away with the
Best Actor awards for their film Udta
Punjab .
- The Best Direction award went to Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury
for Pink and Neerja won the award for Best Film.
- In a special category, Taapsee Pannu won the Woman
of the Year award for Pink.
Roger Federer lifts a record
8th Wimbledon title beating Marin Cilic in Men’s singles
Roger Federer won a
record eighth Wimbledon title and became the tournament’s oldest
champion with a straight-sets victory over Marin Cilic. Federer
claimed his 19th Grand Slam title.
- The 36-year old Federer is also Wimbledon’s oldest
men’s winner of the modern era, succeeding Arthur Ashe, who was almost 32
when he won in 1976. This was his 11th Wimbledon final and 29th title at
the majors.
- iii. With this victory, Federer also became the
first player since Bjorn Borg in 1976 to win Wimbledon without dropping a
set in the entire tournament.
Lewis Hamilton won Formula
One's fifth British Grand Prix
Mercedes’ Lewis
Hamilton won the British Grand Prix for the fifth time –
matching the record of Jim Clark and Alain Prost to cut Sebastian Vettel’s
championship lead to just a single point.
- They allowed Valtteri Bottas to grab second from
Kimi Raikkonen to secure a Mercedes one-two, as Vettel trailed home
seventh.
I H Manudev wins 1st National
Masters snooker tournament title
I H Manudev has won
the first National Masters snooker tournament title in Chennai.
- Alok Kumar, a former national men’s champion, had
been in fine form coming into the summit clash but found Karnataka’s
Manudev a tough proposition.
Former Sikkim CM Nar Bahadur
Bhandari passes away
Nar Bahadur Bhandari, one of
the longest-serving chief ministers of Sikkim has died recently.
Mr. Bhandari, a three-term former Chief Minister was 77 years old.
- He became the Chief Minister of Sikkim for the first time in 1979 on a Janata Parishad ticket and then again in 1984 and 1989 on a Sikkim Sangram Parishad ticket.
