Two new contraceptives launched by Health Ministry to aid family planning
In a bid to keep a check on the increasing population in the country, The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched two new contraceptives- MPA and Chhaya.
  • The two new contraceptives, an injectable contraceptive MPA under the ‘Antara’ programme and a contraceptive pill, ‘Chhaya’, in the public health system will expand the basket of contraceptive choices to meet the emerging needs of couples.
  • The contraceptives are being launched under the government’s Mission Parivar Vikas, a central family planning initiative.
  • The main objective of the Mission Parivar Vikas family planning initiative is to bring down the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) to 2.1, which is when the population starts stabilizing, by the year 2025.


Modi gives call to respect Myanmar’s integrity
India said that it shares Myanmar’s concerns over “extremist violence” in the Rakhine State, from where 1,25,000 Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging all stakeholders to find a solution that respects the country’s unity.
  • It was important to maintain the security and stability of the land and maritime boundaries of the two countries.


Centre sets up panel to suggest on new jobs
The NDA government has constituted a new task force led by NITI Aayog vice-chairman Rajiv Kumar to recommend measures to increase employment by promoting labour-intensive exports.
  • Indian workforce has high aspirations, a majority of the workers are still employed in low-productivity, low-wage jobs in small, micro and own-account enterprises. An urgent and sustained expansion of the organized sector is essential to address India’s unemployment and under-employment issue.
  • The committee has been asked to submit its report by November 2017.


Joint Committee on The Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill, 2017 
The Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance Bill, 2017 has been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee of both the Houses, under the Chairpersonship of Shri Bhupender Yadav, M.P for examination and presenting a Report to the Parliament.
  • The Bill seeks to provide for the resolution of certain categories of financial service providers in distress; the deposit insurance to consumers of certain categories of financial services; designation of systemically important financial institutions; and establishment of a Resolution Corporation for protection of consumers of specified service providers and of public funds for ensuring the stability and resilience of the financial system and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
  • The proposed legislation together with the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 is expected to provide a comprehensive resolution mechanism for the economy.


Focus on ‘impactful’ Smart City projects: Centre
In an obvious measure to grab eyeballs, the Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry has asked the State governments to push up implementation of “impactful” projects which will get people talking about the Smart City Mission.
  • The Centre and the State governments together have identified 261 projects worth Rs. 32,600 crore under this category. Majority of these projects are in the first lot of 20 smart cities announced in January 2016. Projects have been shortlisted without any clear definition of what “impactful” means.
  • The list of “impactful” projects varies from Museum of Urban History in Bhubaneswar, to Adventure Park in Udaipur, to rejuvenation of water bodies in Coimbatore, to 5 km-long heritage walk in Warangal, to conservation of built heritage in Thanjavur, to redevelopment of world-famous Manikarnika Ghat in Varanasi.


CGWB enters into MoA with IIS Bangalore
Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Ministry of Water Resources, RD & GR has entered into an Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore for ‘Development of ground water flow models and preparation of aquifer management plans for parts of Karnataka’.
  • This mathematical model being developed as a part of the aquifer mapping and management programme will render better understanding of existing groundwater scenarios, predicting response of groundwater system to various stress conditions expected to arise in the future and developing effective management plans incorporating different demand and supply side interventions. 
  • The study will cover an area of 48000 sqr. kms comprising Chikballapur and Kolar Districts and parts of Bagalkot, Bangalore Rural, Belgaum, Bellary, Chitradurga, Davanagere, Gadag, Gulbarga and Yadgir districts.


Citizenship of TRS MLA cancelled
The Home Ministry has cancelled the citizenship of a Telangana Rashtra Samithi MLA Ramesh Chennamaneni after it was found that he had a German passport. India does not allow dual citizenship.
  • Ramesh Chennamaneni, TRS MLA for Vemulawada in Karimnagar district of Telangana, had allegedly obtained Indian citizenship by submitting “fake documents” and was elected thrice to the Assembly, including in a byelection.
  • He has been given 30 days by the Home Ministry to file a reply. The citizenship was cancelled following a probe by a court-appointed committee.


India, Japan to diversify defence ties
India and Japan agreed on a range of initiatives to diversify and deepen their defence cooperation.
  • These include anti-submarine warfare, counter-terrorism, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and technological cooperation.
  • On naval cooperation, the two Ministers noted the successful conclusion of the Malabar trilateral exercises including the U.S. in July.


15 States sue President over repeal of scheme
Fifteen States and the District of Columbia have filed a lawsuit in New York challenging U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to end a programme protecting young immigrants from deportation.
  • The suit was first announced by Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who called Mr. Trump’s act “a dark time for our country.” 
  • The announcement also prompted ex-President Barack Obama to make a rare re-entry onto the political stage to decry the decision as “wrong”, “self-defeating” and “cruel”.


Biocon, JDRF to conduct global study on oral insulin
Biocon and JDRF, a global organisation funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research and advocacy worldwide, announced a partnership to support a global study with an oral insulin drug candidate, Insulin Tregopil, in people with T1D.
  • Insulin Tregopil, an oral insulin molecule being developed by Biocon, is one of the programmes in the global oral insulin space. The insulin can improve postprandial glucose control with reduced side effects and greater adherence, thus aiding T1D management.
  • Biocon proposes to conduct an open label study to evaluate the doses of Insulin Tregopil and compare it with therapeutic doses of Insulin Aspart in individuals with T1D
