Safer Internet Day (SID) is organised by Insafe in second Tuesday of February of each year to promote safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, especially among children and young people in Europe and across the world.
  • This year's theme, "Create, connect and share respect: A better internet starts with you"


PM to lay foundation stone of temple in UAE
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of a temple in Abu Dhabi during his visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE)
  • The event will be part of a three-nation tour from February 9 to 12, starting in Palestine, where Mr. Modi will be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit and pay tributes at the memorial of the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
  • The visit will start on the 10th of February with Palestine from where the PM will travel to the UAE and round-off the trip with a stopover in Oman.
  • The UAE granted the temple project after India conveyed the demand of its nationals for a place of worship during Mr. Modi’s 2015 visit to the country.
  • He will also address the World Government Summit in Dubai.


Gobardhan Yojana to support farmers
The Haryana government has launched the ‘Gobardhan Yojana’ to provide organic manure and cow urine with an aim to benefit farmers
  • A provision of Rs. 11 crore has been made to provide benefits of various projects under this scheme


J&K government asked center to revisit Atal doctrine
The J&K government has asked the Centre to revisit former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s doctrine to defuse tension with Pakistan. 
  • The state government believes that dialogue and reconciliation is the only way to restore peace along the borders and on the mainland.
The Atal doctrine on Kashmir called for peace, progress and prosperity in the Valley by imbibing the spirit of Insaniyat (Humanity), Jamhuriyat (Democracy) and Kashmiriyat (Identity of the people of Kashmir). The doctrine was universally acclaimed by all segments across of political spectrum in the state, including the extremist elements in the Valley.
  • Vajpayee also signed a Lahore Declaration with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on February 21, 1999. As part of the declaration, Pakistan agreed to resolve all bilateral issues between the two countries, including the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in a peaceful manner and through dialogue and to promote people to people contact.


Odisha seeks special battalion for its coasts
The Odisha government has sought the Centre’s sanction for raising a special police battalion exclusively for strengthening security along its 480-km-long coastline
  • A proposal in this regard has already been sent to the Union Home Ministry by the State’s Home Department in view of the growing need for guarding the long coastline
  • The State government has also urged the Centre for three jetties on the Odisha coast at Bhusandeswar in Balasore, Sipasarubali in Puri and Maluda in Khurda districts.


UP fined Rs.10 lakh for e-waste on Ramganga river bank
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs.10 lakh on the Uttar Pradesh government as environment compensation for failing to take action to dispose of the e-waste on banks of Moradabad’s Ramganga River.
  • The green court also imposed an environment compensation of Rs.50, 000 on the Moradabad District Magistrate.


Assam Government, Ola Sign MoU for River Taxi Service
Cab-hailing startup Ola and the Government of Assam have signed an MoU to pilot an app-based river taxi service in Guwahati. The river taxis will be machine-operated boats and users will be able to book the rides through Ola's app.
  • It'll bring commute time down to 2-5 minutes from 45 minutes by road. This MoU was signed during the Global Investors Summit: Advantage Assam.


‘When 2 adults marry, none should interfere’
Two adults are free to marry and “no third party” has a right to harass or cause harm to them, said Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, speaking against honour killings 
  • The court is hearing a petition filed by Shakti Vahini, an NGO, to make honour killing a specific crime.


Maldives Crisis- Government Declares State of Emergency
The Maldives president, Abdulla Yameen, has declared a state of emergency in the country as heavily armed troops stormed the country’s top court and a former president Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed was arrested in a deepening political crisis.
  • The political crisis began after the Maldives government refused to obey a court order to release political prisoners and accused the court of attempting to impeach the President.
  • The former Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed urged India to "act swiftly" to help in resolving the ongoing political crisis in the island nation.


Sweden and UN World Food Programme signed for $370mn Strategic Partnership Agreement
Sweden and the United Nations World Food Programme have signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement committing an unprecedented $370 million dollars to WFP over the next four years.
  • The contribution for the period 2018-2021 is the biggest ever made by a donor within a WFP Strategic Partnership Agreement.
The World Food Programme (WFP) is the food assistance branch of the United Nations and the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger and promoting food security. The WFP strives to eradicate hunger and malnutrition, with the ultimate goal in mind of eliminating the need for food aid itself. It is a member of the United Nations Development Group and part of its Executive Committee.


India Successfully Test-Fires Nuclear-Capable Agni-I Missile
India successfully test-fired the indigenously developed short-range nuclear capable Agni-I ballistic missile
  • The missile was fired from the Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast.
  • The test was conducted by the Strategic Force Command of the Indian Army. The range of Missile is 700 km. It was 18th version of Agni-I.
Agni-I is a short-range ballistic missile developed by DRDO of India under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program.
  • It is a single-stage missile developed after the Kargil War to fill the gap between 250 km range of Prithvi-II and 2,500 km range of Agni-II. It was first launched on 25 January 2002 from a road mobile launcher at Integrated Test Range (ITR), Wheeler Island.  


ASI discovered pottery pieces at Prachi Valley
The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has discovered pottery pieces, and tools made of stones and bones believed to be of the pre-Christian era from a mound in Jalalpur village of Cuttack district, Odisha.
  • Discoveries of ancient artefacts indicated that a rural settlement might have thrived in that period. These settlements could have had cultural and trade ties with other settlements in the Prachi Valley that had come up around the Prachi river, which gradually disappeared.
Prachi Valley civilisation is believed to be earlier than that of Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro flourished on the banks of Prachi river. Prachi Valley civilisation has contributed a lot towards amalgamation, assimilation and proliferation of different religious faiths and cults.
  • The Prachi river, a tributary of Mahanadi, originates about 10 km away from Bhubaneswar. The river flows through Puri, Khurda, Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts and it is this region that is called the Prachi Valley.


Scientists discover the first planets outside the milky way
Using data from a NASA X-ray laboratory in space, Xinyu Dai, an astrophysicist and professor at the University of Oklahoma, detected, for the first time ever, a population of planets beyond the Milky Way galaxy.
  • The mass of the planets ranges in size from Earth’s moon to the massive Jupiter, our solar system’s biggest planet.
  • Researchers planned to study a black hole and chanced upon something entirely unexpected.


Google unveils three-step safety campaign for users
Google has unveiled a security campaign in India to create awareness around Internet safety.
  • Google has recommended three simple steps that can help everyone start their journey towards Internet safety. This includes reviewing security settings and Google account activity with one click for all Android devices and Gmail users.
  • The programme called ‘#SecurityCheckKiya’ is targeted at young and first-time users to protect themselves from account hijacking. It is also aimed at shielding Android mobile devices from malicious apps.


Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant gets the extension till June 30, 2019
Niti Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant was on Monday has given an extension until June 30 next year.
  • He was appointed the chief executive officer of the government think tank on February 17, 2016, for a two-year term.
  • The order issued by the personnel ministry said the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the extension of Kant’s tenure till June 30, 2019.
  • Before taking over as the CEO of National Institution for Transforming India (Niti Aayog), he was the secretary, department of industrial policy and promotion.


Fifth South Asia Region Public Procurement Conference
5th South Asia Region Public Procurement Conference is being held at New Delhi.
  • The Government of India (GOI), through the Public Procurement Division (PPD) of the Ministry of Finance and All India Management Association (AIMA) are hosting the Conference.
  • The theme of the Fifth Conference is: “Public Procurement and Service Delivery”.
The objective of the Conference is to enable the Heads of Public Procurement and other key stakeholders in the eight South Asian countries to meet and learn from one another and from experts in the field of public procurement.
  • The Conference is held under the auspices of the South Asia Region Public Procurement Network (SARPPN), which is sponsored and facilitated by the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank. The First Conference was held in Kathmandu in 2010, the second in Islamabad in 2014, the third in Dhaka 2015 and the fourth in Sri Lanka 2017.


National level meeting with Laghu Udyog Bharati members
A national level meeting was recently convened by the Government of India with the members of Laghu Udyog Bharati.
  • Laghu Udyog Bharati is a registered all India organization of Micro and Small Industries in India since 1994. Laghu udyog Bharati has its membership spread over the length and breadth of the country. It has membership in more than 400 Districts with 250 Branches all over the Country.


Jerome H Powell Sworn in as 16th Chairman of Federal Reserve
Jerome H Powell was sworn in as the 16th Chairman of the Federal Reserve for a four-year term. Mr Powell has succeeded Janet Yellen, the first woman to lead the US central bank in its 100-year history.
  • Powell was nominated for the post in November 2017 by President Donald Trump. The oath was administered by Vice Chairman Randal K. Quarles in the Board Room.

Shri A.K.Prasad has going to take charge as the new Financial Commissioner (Railways), with effect from 1st February 2018.
  • Current Financial Commissioner B.N.Mohapatra, who superannuated on 31st January, 2018.


Shubhankar Sharma Becomes Best Indian Golfer in the World
Shubhankar Sharma has emerged as the best Indian golfer in the world, grabbing the 72nd position in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). He has won the Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
  • Sharma has enjoyed a golden run over the past few months on the international stage, clinching his first European Tour win at the Joburg Open.
