IWAI Signs Contract with DST
Providing safe, environment friendly and economical mode of transportation through National Waterway-1 (NW-1), the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), Ministry of Shipping has signed a contract with M/s DST, Germany to design vessels, especially suited to navigate the 1620 km stretch of NW-1.
  • Government is developing NW-1 under the Jal Marg Vikas Project, with assistance from the World Bank at an estimated cost of Rs. 4,200 crore.


5th BIRAC Innovators Meet: 
BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council), a non-profit Public Sector Enterprise under the aegis of Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, is organizing the 5th Innovators Meet in New Delhi. 

  • The theme of the meet would be ‘Biotech Innovation Ecosystem – Strategizing the Next Leap’. The Innovators Meet is being organized for marking BIRAC’s continuous efforts to foster innovation and entrepreneurship in all places of research. 
  • BIRAC’s mandate is to serve as a single window interface to promote affordable innovation in key social sectors with higher focus on start-ups & small and medium enterprises.


Incredible India Tourism Investors Summit (IITIS)-2016: 
It was recently inaugurated by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. IITIS is a platform for domestic and international investors to meet project owners from across Indian states and the private sector. 
  • The Key Highlights of the Summit are- Participation from 29 Indian States and UTs; Around 700 investable projects from across the country and from across various sectors of tourism; 
  • Total participation of more than 1800 registered delegates; Participation from 250 National and International investors; Key Policy Makers from Central and State Government; Welcome Diner & Cultural Evening and 23 seminars across the two days event.

Delhi's Race Course Road has now been renamed as Lok Kalyan Marg.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence is located on this road.
  • PM’s famous residential address 7Race course road will be known as 7Lok Kalyan Marg


Rafale deal cleared
The government has cleared the much-anticipated deal with France for 36 Rafale fighter jets which will cost 7.878 billion Euros.
  • Last year, the original plan to buy 126 planes was scaled down to 36 due to the Air Force's urgent requirement.


Patna to host three-day international Sikh meet
A three-day International Sikh Conclave will be hosted in Patna from September 22-24. Scholars, researchers and noted personalities from across the world will be participating in the event, which will be inaugurated by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. 
  • The International Sikh Conclave will be held as a precursor to the impressive ceremony lined up by the Bihar government for the Parkash Utasav in January to mark the 350th year of the birth of Guru Gobind Singh.


31 nations join Paris climate pact
The landmark Paris agreement on climate change moved closer to reality after 31 countries joined during the United Nations General Assembly. 
  • To come into force, the Paris agreement needs ratification from 55 countries that account for at least 55 per cent of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions.
  • With this event, in which leaders ceremonially submitted paperwork to ratify the accord, a total of 60 countries have joined the Paris accord, meeting the threshold. But they account for just less than 48 per cent of emissions, according to UN figures.


Cabinet okays Rs.5,176 cr. for GAIL pipeline project
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved viability gap funding of Rs.5,176 crore, which works out to 40 per cent of the estimated capital cost of Rs.12,940 crore, to GAIL for the development of the 2,539-km- long Jagdishpur-Haldia and Bokaro-Dhamra Gas Pipeline (JHBDPL) project.
  • The pipeline will also supply gas to the defunct fertiliser units in Gorakhpur, Sindri and Barauni which the government is looking to revive.


Digital classifieds to be $1.2-bn. market
The digital classified industry is projected to grow three times to $1.2 billion, on the back of growing smartphone penetration and Internet user base, according to a joint-report by Google and KPMG.

  • The report ‘Digital Classifieds in India 2020’ added that the next phase of growth of digital classifieds would be driven by the rapid growth of e-services, real estate and automobiles.


Oxford tops the list as the world's leading university
In the latest Times Higher Education world rankings index, Oxford topped the list as the world's leading university, followed by the California Institute of Technology, Stanford and Cambridge.
  • The United States had 63 institutions in the top 200, while the UK had 32 and Australia had eight. 
  • Asian universities, with more rising up the list in 2016, the region's top institution National University of Singapore was ranked 24th. 


HDFC Bank named India’s most valuable brand
HDFC Bank has emerged as India’s most valuable brand for the third consecutive year, ranking first on the BrandZ Top 50 list released by WPP Group.
  • HDFC Bank was followed by Airtel and SBI in the list.


Mukesh Ambani tops Forbes' 100 Richest Indians list
Forbes India has released the annual India rich list and Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has topped the Forbes' '100 Richest Indians' list.
  • India's richest pharmaceutical magnate Dilip Shanghvi remains at 2nd.


SIEMA inks pact with Anna varsity
The Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association (SIEMA) has inked an agreement with Anna University, Regional Campus, Coimbatore (AURCC) to work jointly on projects required for industries.




Industrialist Adi Godrej conferred Clinton Global Citizen Award
Industrialist Adi Godrej, the Chairman of Mumbai-based Godrej Group, was conferred the 10th Annual Clinton Global Citizen Award for leadership in business and philanthropy.
  • The award recognises Godrej's leadership in transforming the intersection of business and philanthropy and making the Godrej Group a global example of what can be achieved through inclusive, sustainable business strategies.


Ritu Rani retires from international hockey
Former Indian women's hockey captain Ritu Rani has announced her retirement from international hockey.
  • The 24-year-old midfielder made the announcement in a mail to Hockey India president Narinder Batra.


Dhoni named captain of India's all-time Test XI by Wisden
MS Dhoni has been named as captain of the Wisden's all-time India Test XI team.
  • The team was announced as India is all set to face New Zealand in Kanpur for their 500th test match. 


Anhad Jawanda shoots gold
Anhad Jawanda won the 25m sports pistol individual gold and was also part of the winning team in the Junior shooting World Cup.
