November 25: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women: 
The 2016 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is observed across the world on 25 November annually. 
  • The theme for this year is “Orange the World - raise funds to end violence against women”.


Modi to attend top police meet
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to take part in a ‘yoga session’ along with top police officers of the country during the three-day annual conference of Director-Generals of Police commencing from Nov 25 in Hyderabad.
  • This is only the third time that the annual DGP conference is being held outside Delhi.
  • After the National Democratic Alliance government came to power in 2014, on Mr. Modi’s recommendation the conference was held for the first time in Guwahati and at Rann of Kutch in Gujarat in 2015.


Govt asks NABARD to disburse Rs 21,000 crore to farmers

Government has allowed NABARD to disburse Rs 21,000 crore to cash-starved farmers, helping them sow winter crops like wheat ahead of the sowing season. The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) will disburse the money to farm cooperatives for onward payments to farmers.
  • The move is aimed at easing liquidity crisis facing farmers who were left with very little cash to buy seeds and fertilizers for winter crops due to restrictions placed on bank withdrawals post demonetisation.


Government approves new 62 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi on November 23, 2016, gave approval for opening of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in each of the 62 uncovered districts for which an amount of Rs.2,871 crore has been allocated.


Tribals celebrate Wangala harvest festival in Meghalaya
Garo tribals People of Meghalaya celebrated the harvest festival of Wangala to marks the end of a period of toil for farmers wanting a good output from their fields. 
  • Wangala harvest festival celebrated in Meghalaya.
  • On the first day of the festival, the people offer their agriculture produce to the Sun God, while on the second day or Kakkat, they will dance Wangala Dance.


Andhra Pradesh CM launches Water Distribution Monitoring Portal
Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu has launched the ‘Smart Water Distribution Monitoring’ web portal, which will enable the people to track the status of drinking water in the nearby water tanks.
  • The Water Distribution Monitoring portal can be accessed from the website ourvmc.org. 
  • The portal has Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system that helps in reduction of water wastage as well as ensures uninterrupted water supply to the households.


Upgraded Jaguar DARIN III aircraft receives IOC
In a significant milestone for the country’s military aviation sector, the upgraded Jaguar DARIN III twin-seat aircraft has received Initial Operation Clearance (IOC).
DARIN III aircraft is an upgraded DARIN I Standard Jaguar. 
  • It was done by HAL.
  • The total design and development covering system requirement capture, specification preparation, software, hardware, electrical and mechanical design and development were carried out indigenously at HAL’s Mission and Combat System Research and Design Centre (MCSRDC).


Kamarajar Port to deploy RFID
Kamarajar Port Ltd., (KPL) is all set to implement a full-fledged Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system from November 30 onwards to track movement of men, materials and laden vehicles within its premises on real time basis.
  • The implementation of RFID system will significantly enhance the security of the port, speed up the movement, track each and every movement of men and material across the port and prevent revenue leakage and any malfunction at the gate.


China successfully launches fourth data satellite
China has successfully launched its fourth data satellite to achieve global network operation that will provide data relay, measurement and control services for its manned spacecraft.
  • The satellite, Tianlian I-04, was launched on a Long March-3C carrier rocket from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre in southwest Sichuan province. The launch marked the 241st mission of China’s Long March series of rockets.


Nepal bans new Indian Rs. 500, Rs. 2,000 notes
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) on Thursday banned the use of India’s new notes of Rs. 500 and Rs. 2,000, terming them “unauthorised and illegal”.
  • these notes would be legal in Nepal only when India issued a notification as per the Foreign Exchange Management Act.

Hero launches four e-cycles under Lectro brand
Hero Cycles introduced four e-cycles with electric pedal assisted technology (EPAC) under the Lectro brand, priced between Rs 42,000 and Rs 83,000. 
EPAC is a nascent segment in the India bicycle market. Even as the premium bicycle segment has shown strong growth over the past few years, the EPAC segment has only recently started and has huge potential in the country. 


Airtel launches India’s first payments bank
Airtel Payments Bank Ltd has become the first payments bank to start operations, offering services in Rajasthan in a limited scale.
  • The pilot will run at 10,000 Airtel retail outlets where basic banking services will be provided. Customers will be offered an interest rate of 7.25% on deposits in savings account, higher than the 4-6% commercial banks are offering.


International Press Freedom Award:
Indian journalist Malini Subramaniam has been conferred with the International Press Freedom Award for her reporting from the Naxal-infested Bastar area. 
  • She is one of the four journalists felicitated by the annual award for their commitment to a free press.


Manoj Bajpayee wins best actor at Asia Pacific Screen Awards
Indian actor Manoj Bajpayee has won thebest performance award by an actor atthe 10th Asia Pacific Screen Awards beatingNawazuddin Siddiqui,who was awarded a special mention in the same category.
  • Winners in the 10thAsia Pacific Screen Awards, said to bethe region's highest accolade in film, were announced at a glittering ceremony in Brisbane last night.


N V Srinivasan appointed as Indo-American Chamber of Commerce President
NVS and Associates Managing Partner, N V Srinivasan is elected as its National President of Trade body Indo-American Chamber of Commerce for the period 2016-17 by the committee of the Chamber during the meeting held in Mumbai. 
  • Other Appointments: Bhasin and Company Managing Partner Lalit Bhasin and entrepreneur Vasant Subramanyan were elected as Executive Vice-Presidents respectively.


Two days after appoinment, Minimum Wages Board chief quits
B. Janardhan Reddy, a BJP leader from Telangana, resigned as chairperson of the Central Advisory Board on Minimum Wages on Nov24.
  • It was only on November 21, 2016 that his appointment was notified through an e-gazette.
  • The appointment of a new Chairman to the reconstituted Board was significant particularly after the Supreme Court, in October, gave a ruling that brought relief to lakhs of contractual employees in government departments and agencies.


Liverpool football great Gerrard calls time on career
Former Liverpool  and England captain Steven Gerrard  announced his retirement from professional football.
  • In total he made 710 appearances for Liverpool, the third-highest total behind Ian Callaghan and former team-mate Jamie Carragher, scoring 186 goals.


Australia’s former women team’s captain Karen Rolton inducted into the ICC’s Hall of Fame
Australia’s former women’s captain Karen Rolton has been inducted into the ICC’s Hall of Fame on November 24, 2016 at a ceremony during the dinner break on the opening Karen Roltonday of the third day/night Test between Australia and South Africa. 
  • Rolton was presented with a personalised cap by ICC Chief Executive David Richardson. She has become the 81st player to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and the sixth woman to receive the award.
